Halloween is dying.

Fewer and fewer houses give out candy in my neighborhood. You see less kids out every year. You get like three hours to accompany your child door to door and then it must get too dark out.

Fuck, when I was a kid we'd only leave the house when it got dark and come home when we felt like it. Didn't care if it was a school night, stay out 'til midnight or later. The goal was to gather as much candy as you could but now that there's a time limit you can't fill a garbage bag. I put out some carved pumpkins last year with candles in them and was apparently the only person who did so.

Actually, I think it's a disappearing sense of community. In the past, people were rarely influenced by people outside their little town/village, and it made sense to have the kids see the neighbors, see that they were nice and well-adjusted, God-fearing people.

Halloween, I think, started losing its appeal at the birth of the information age. Stories of contaminated candies that were once limited to a small area became known worldwide and affected a much larger number of people. There is also laziness and security, and a lesser appeal to make environments palatable. That is, why go outside in the cold and dark to get candy, that might be poisoned, and decorate and wear costumes when you can just sit back and watch TV in your home?

With the Internet, I guess today's parents are a lot less inclined to bring their kids to see the community, simply because they've seen enough of people and their kids jerk off to gore porn from the age of 5, so skeletons and witches aren't really scary anymore.

It just lost its appeal. Some people don't like to be scared, or live emotions. Most people don't. They enjoy stability. It's a chemical drive. People are chemical beings, and chemicals seek to fill their orbitals and be stable.

The community thing exists online, too. I mean, there's us, there's the Reddit people, there's the Facebook people, there's all the other people we would shoot dead given the first opportunity. Same thing in real life, except in real life, you're physically, politically or financially stuck somewhere, but some people choose their communities and choose to meet their neighbors, enter in decoration competitions, etc.

I am here because I like it. I can shut it off, I can go to another website, etc. It's easy, doesn't cost anything, doesn't take anything, but I think I am digressing.

>> No.4910492

Back to Halloween, I think it's just really to you, yourself, open your door to the community and give candy for that day. It's just a fun opportunity to do so, and if it's important to you, you should seek a physical community that engages in that kind of stuff, or be brave and just do it anyway.

But yeah, community is a very important thing.

I understand it's not safe to walk in their neighborhood at night, but some of these kids are like 17 and I feel like they're casing the neighborhood under the guise of trick of treating, peeking into my living room past me to see what I have to steal. You don't walk up many of the streets here after dark. On the street where I live some poor bastard forgot this and went for a jog at night.

This is my first time celebrating Halloween.

I've been living in the US a while now, but have always been in a deluxe apartment in the sky straight until this year. The apartment mostly housed single people, TINK/DINK couples and couples with children too young to go door to door, so I never had to do the whole Halloween thing.
I now own a home on the ground in a neighbourhood rife with children. I bought a huge sack of mixed sweeties to hand out. It's a good mix, too. Lots of better-name stuff. I also bought a second sack of Nestle chocolates to supplement them. Now I'm hearing that you people barely even do it anymore? What. The. Fuck.
I should have agreed to go out tonight rather than stay home and make nice with the new neighbours.
I. Hate. Everybody.

Cadbury's is certainly superior to Hershey's. If Hershey's is a 2/10, Cadbury's, Fry's and Rowntree are each around 6/10. British Quaker's just know chocolate better than American Mennonites, I guess.
Even though two of those brands are now owned by Swiss co. Nestle, they still produce superior chocolates to Hershey's. None of them are as good as Frey. Russian chocolates are also surprisingly good. Ever have Alpen Gold? It's now owned by Kraft, but it's not sold in the US. Due to its name, Swiss think it's Swiss even though it's a Russian brand.

You knock on the door, and it begins to creeeaaak open slowly, before being jerked wide open as a terrifying fat clown leaps out of the shadows with a screech! You stumble backward, almost falling, as the horrible monster cackles with laughter. "Ha ha ha! Got you pretty good, eh kid?"

Your adrenaline rush abates slightly as you realize it isn't a real clown, just an overweight middle-aged guy in (disturbingly realistic) clown make-up. "T-t-trick or treat?" you stammer, still shuddering from the shock.

"Sure thing," he says with a twinkle in his eye. "Here, have one of my homemade popcorn balls!" He tosses you a wad of candied popcorn wrapped in wax paper.

"Uh, thanks," you say, looking it over, "but I'm not really supposed to take homemade... hey! These aren't candy bits! Is this... Xanax?? What the heck, man!" The clown-faced man cackles with laughter again. "It's you, isn't it?" you say, wide-eyed with sudden realization. "You're the one who puts razor-blades in apples and stuff!"

"YES!" he howls. "...Well, no, actually -- not the razor-blade/apple thing. They just grow that way around here, for some reason. Nobody's been able to figure out why. It's weird. But metaphorically speaking, YES! I'm All-Hallow's Steve! I'm the reason grannies can't bake cookies for the kiddies! It used to be about demons, and ghouls, and dark creatures clawing through the border between worlds! It used to be about making noise so that the devil didn't suck out your soul! And now look at it," he spits. "It's all candy and rainbows! Bright lights and soft corners! Well, I'm taking it back! I'm putting the FEAR back into Halloween!"

"You won't get away with this!"

"I am getting away with it, fool! In some towns, I've got people so scared, the kids aren't even allowed to trick-or-treat in their own neighborhoods! They have to go to a shopping mall!"

That tears it -- you drop your candy-bucket and grab your weapon.

Candy poisonings are almost entirely the realm of urban legends.

The only poisonings that happen are perpetrated by adults against young relatives, usually as part of insurance fraud. I'd say these are mostly white althought i have plenty of black neighbors, but we aren't the ghetto. Coming home tonight I could barely drive through the neighborhoods because there were cars everywhere. Then I noticed most of the people in the cares were black. I'm guess they don't feel safe or something in their ghettos so they drive over here. But then I heard one couple tonight saying "We come here for the good candy and shit" oohhh... so you're not here because your worried about getting shot your here so you can get better quality handouts for your kids while making my streets undrivable.

Whitey on occasion sells drugs, steals a candy bar from the store, and gets in a non lethal fist fight. For the most part we keep it as civil as it should be though, despite our Caucasian poverty.

Blacks are typically violent and deadly. Times have changed. White man doesn't kill black man (or white man) unless he has some personal reason to do so, and that isn't even based on race.

What the hell kind of 1984 city council do you have? When I was growing up it was a free for all, you go out when you wanted, where you wanted, for as long as you wanted. There were huge crowds in the neighborhoods, people set up haunted houses in their yards, EVERYONE was in costume. Now days no one decorates, or at most puts up a pumpkin cutout on the door, no one dresses up hardly at all, I got 1 kid at my door last night, and on top of all this now the government is telling kids when they can and can't go to the their neighbors for candy? Fuck the holiday, it's not the one that's doomed, this country is.

So glad I don't live in a faggot town that has halloween on the weekend or during daylight hours. seriously, what the fuck?

Sadly I've never lived where I got trick or treaters. House I lived in was on a very busy main road, too dangerous and the houses too far apart, also no kids around.

Now I live in an apartment complex of 6 buildings, but no children live here (they don't rent out to families with kids, thank god)

But me and my older sister went for a walk from 6-7 to see the houses up the road decorated and the kids trick or treating. It was rainy so it wasn't as crazy as it probably is during good weather, but there is a grade school up the road and all the parents park there, then take their kids through the nearby streets.

One house really went all out, it was a two family, both floor wrap around porches absolutely decked out, television propped in upstairs window with a video of a scary face glowing and blasting typical SPOOOOKY talk, like "ARE THOSE CHILDREN AT THE DOOOORRR!!?? DELICIOUUUSSS" and shit about stealing your soul, etc. Fog machine. Front yard done up like a cemetery, people in costume standing around creepily staring at children and parents. one guy was an evil clown with a glowing red nose, had a bicycle horn he kept honking now and then. it was awesome to to the point that parents were standing across the street to take videos of it

>> No.4914165

>>4914164
also the best thing about houses like this is that the neighbors get jealous and try to keep up with them. the house next door also had a fog machine, porch wrapped in fake web stuff, spooky red light inside the foyer from behind, so the person giving out candy could only be seen by silhouette, and they wore a grim reaper costume with glowing red eyes. they also had someone in costume hiding behind a shrub in their front lawn to scare kids

there are actually quite a few houses in my usual walking route that do it up like this, not the effects and stuff, but heavily decorated, one house seems to get a new life sized creepy figure each year and they add it to the collection on the porch, it's gotten to the point where there isnt really enough room for them, its amusingly crowded

cemetery front yards are popular, another house also had some sort of inflatable witch house? that i think they had the person giving out candy standing in, it had lightning effects inside and fog

i think people get more into halloween in new england vs other places, maybe because things actually LOOK halloweenish and spooky here this time of year

>> No.4914177

Depends on where you live. Grew up in a small, low-density suburb, and on Halloween, absolutely everyone was out on the street. People who weren't hosting parties would just leave big bowls of candy on the porch and go roam in costume. Hay rides, haunted houses, apple bobbing, crawfish boils, homemade icecream, and local bands were just part of the community's celebration; kids and adults could walk into anyone's yard and start a conversation or partake in whatever activity was going on.

Moved downtown in the same city (college town), no kids out, no decorations, loud drunks and plenty of drugs.

Moved downtown in a small northern city, had 6 trick-or-treaters. Now I've got a whole bunch of sour patch watermelons to devour. I can't believe I'm saying it, but I'd love to move out to a suburb again someday. The sense of community (although it only happened a few times a year) was incredible, and it can only happen in a place with that kind of population density (not rural) and that level of safety (no traffic, "urban youth").
