We don't need our food to be cooked, you can eat pretty much anything raw as long as it's fresh and the animal isn't diseased or whatever. It's just more efficient and safer to eat it cooked, plus it generally tastes better. Humans are just the only animals smart enough and with high enough tool-using capacity to use fire safely, fire is just as hazard to other animals.

Tech major here, and the theory on why humans cultivated fire to cook their food is because it would make it easier to ingest. Tough meats/ligaments and stringy veggies went down much easier when they were cooked, regardless if they were more nutritious or not. It did in turn weaken our jaw muscles, allowing our cranial cavities to grow, thus leaving room for our brains to develop.

seriously, that is the current theory on how fire and cooking food effected our evolution.

who says humans to to eat cooked food?

i've heard the human immune system is much stronger than we realize. we can get away with eating a lot of raw and rancid stuff.

there's really just a few strains of bacteria that are dangerous (e. coli 0157 and salmonella being two), they're actually pretty uncommon.

This is basic evolution and biology. Once we were able to cook our food, the ability to process raw meat no longer mattered. It stopped getting selected for, so we stopped being able to do it. Or maybe not, hell I never tried to eat raw meat.

You're assuming that human digestion is purely a matter of one single species. The ability to eat raw meat doesn't need to become an evolutionary detriment in order for it to fade from a population. If the relevant intestinal flora decline in prominence or disappear completely because of a change in environment within the gut, it's effectively the same result.

>> No.4903154

>>4902987

I just wanted to add to this: many animal species also rely heavily on gut flora to help them digest and in cases where young animals have been taken away from their parents at or shortly after birth, they can have problems eating what is normally in their diet. On an interesting and gross note, some herbivores get theirs by eating the poop of older animals of their species.

Cooking foods makes them more chemically available; this means that the same quantity of food possesses more nutrition after cooking. By simple heating, we can get more bang for our buck.

Furthermore, this allows us to prosper nutritionally with less developed jaws, allowing more room in the skull for larger, more useful brains.

>> No.4905213

All vegetables produce secondary materials unsuitable for human consumption. For example, corn husks aren't really useful to humans digestively. Most vegetables produce more of this sort of waste than useful digestive matter. As such, much of this "waste" is fed to animals. Then we eat those animals. By this method, we make the most resourceful use of our resources.

When vegans talk about "muh food fed to pigs," they always have no idea they're talking about food we can't eat anyways.

every hunting culture on the face of the earth values raw meat from a fresh kill. eyeballs in particular are treats usually reserved for children.

what we discovered was that it's easier to get protein from cooked meat, and that's what kick-started our intelligence.
