Sorry, /ck/ just a quick question:

Is Five Guys any good?

I only recently (as of today) found out my own town had one and now I'm SUPER curious about trying them out since I've always been a fan of burger joints.

I once had to wait out a 6hr car repair because I didn't have a ride home. I went there and had several servings of fries at regular intervals and it was cheap. They lure you in with cheap but good fries and then stuff it up you and rub it with those hamburgers.

There's nothing special about their burgers, no fancy seasonings, no exotic ingredients. I suppose they consider "it tastes like what a hamburger tastes like when you buy meat at the store and grill it yourself in a pan, as opposed to uniquely-processed (i.e. engineered) burgers from other chains.

I wouldn't comment on their worth... If you can cook and don't mind, you can save money and get roughly the same thing. If you like "made it yourself" taste but don't want to make it yourself, it's a good option.

5 guys makes a legit burger, it wot change your life but it's solid for a franchise. The toping options are done right, though I'd like to seeline, offer something outside of their standards once in a while. The fries are a bit wilty for my taste, I'd prefer they were crisper. The seasoning on the fries is top notch and extra points for malt vinegar as a condiment. The prices are reasonable, I'd say a meal would be under $10 and the smaller cheeseburger is an adequate meal, though the double is where all men should go.

7/10 would bang, but 8-10/10 reserved for that special someone.

The burger is literally the burger you can make in your kitchen at home.

Just buy ground beef, patties, and veggies from the grocery store and assemble it yourself for a fraction of the cost.

Seriously. I know it's usually bullshit to say this about a fast food place, because you can't really recreate places like McDonalds, Wendy's, or Burger King due to corporate black magic in the kitchen.

I don't know about you guys, but in the midwestern US you can go to pretty much any decent sized gas station/truck stop and they'll have a little lunch counter with old ladies behind it.

Ask for a burger and they'll make pretty much exactly the same thing you get at five guys. They'll just turn around, reach in a fridge and pull out a wad of ground beef from kroger, slice up some tomatoes and onions, and put your patty on the grill. In 15 minutes you've got a great burger for about $3.50. Some places will even throw your fries in the deep fryer for another buck. And those fries are going to be god-like.

I really hated it at first because of all the fast food connoisseurs who made it sound like it would be the best meal of my life. Needless to say it's impossible for any fast food burger to live up to that kind of hype. I thought it tasted like shit, and the fries are among the worst of any fast food fries, unsurprisingly since fries are the one thing fast food restaurants are usually pretty good at.

It tries to be "not fast food" while not actually not being fast food. As a result the scientific aspect of a place like McDonalds is lost, meaning that insane consistency isn't possible, but because it's still shitty fast food prepared by retards, it doesn't rise to the level of a real restaurant.

I give it a 3 out of 10, that's the best I can do.

Fast food, by definition is faster in someway, partially or completely, cooked ahead of time.

You are confusing that with food entirely made to order. Just because a joint has uncomfortable chairs in a casual setting, and serves fries, doesn't make it fast food. Sounds like fresh cut fries are a new thing to your sophisticated palate.

People who really like a burger and fries tend to like Five Guys, considering it a step up from Burger King, and maybe even better than In-N-Out, or at least on par with it.

People who find fast food connoisseurship silly tend to see Five Guys as a slightly more upscale fast food joint, and nothing particularly special. I'm in that camp.

Then there are those who buy into the fantasy that a yuppie burger joint is somehow magically transformed into something other than fast food because they cook to order when things are slow. So, I'm not so sure about that whole life experience thing or that you have tried more food or restaurants than I. >I don't know where your elitism is coming from, but it reeks
I have no idea where that statement is coming from, but my guess is regional bias. LA is where our American fast food culture was pretty much created. As the backlash against fast food mounted plenty of restaurants there (and later across the country) found success by offering what amounted to a fast food menu (plus a few salads) in an environment that was more upscale. But the addition of a wine list does not make a burger joint into something other than glorified fast food. Sorry, Umami Burger, I'm not buying it. But I know lots of people see that distinction.

I don't. The main reason I don't is because these glorified fast food joints really aren't turning out food that's better than fast food. They've just managed to remove some of the stigma from fast food, and it's brought them success. Good for them, but I don't find it particularly interesting. But I've been checking in here for about a year. I know the various scenes going on in NYC, and to a lesser degree LA. But the culture here is totally different. I'm fascinated that most home cooking is lost, except for a handful of folks. I'm amused by the Sinophobia, the worship of steak and burgers, how do I jazz up instant ramen or chicken breast and of course, fast food connoisseurship (which I blame on the food network). I'm also fascinated by the way vegan trolling has morphed into semi-serious discussions over the last few months.

There is an article or two in this somewhere. Even if not it's worth coming here in my off hours for a laugh. And I do my best to contribute when I have something to offer. (Usually in the home cooking threads).

Yeah, that's my point, nobody cares dude. You don't have to have credentials on /ck/ to have an opinion on something, especially fast food. That being said, I don't get the guys reply to your first post but its a pissing contest now and it looks ridiculous.

>if you want to split hairs like your typical ck fast food expert, it's fast casual. which is still fast food.
No.Maybe because it is a franchise with good market coverage..is this why you keep insisting it is categorized in your mind? Fast food is food with time shaved off of the normal cooking time. It's not based on casual seating. Whether a restaurant cuts time with mass production of no special orders waiting for the next whopper request at lunch peak, or par cooked frozen food going into pressure fryers or making bread or chicken breasts sit in steam drawers for your gourmet panini...that's the science of making a meal ready in 2mins, not 30. Nothing at Five is frozen or made ahead, not even sure about grilled onions.

And you don't know me or where I live and travel Are you a child? You can develop a preference for mealy interior twice fried potatoes, or not, but you still can't find fault with fresh fries I was in DC during the start of Five Guys, long before the hamburger joint hipster crap, in a city where everyone had money, the tech boom Bush years. Maybe you wouldn't understand it, but a line around the block for 2 years, in a metro inaccessible neighborhood of busy executives who had to find a rare place to park, wait in a one hourline, texting one guy to placehold, and eat any cuisine money can buy? It was because it was natural fresh. I like my duck fat fries as well as the next gourmand, but I'm not going to compare Five Guys to fast food.

>I enjoyed third rate burgers before it was cool

lel

also if you don't know what fast casual is, or think that it's somehow special that the grill is within sight of the cash register, you obviously don't know too much about restaurants. they cook the patties on site at pretty much all fast food joints. you've been duped by a well thought out layout that trades on the false notion that seeing a semi retarded guy flipping burgers makes them more wholesome.

I think locations may vary.
I've been to one in Texas and Atlanta and they were both very good.
The one in my hometown in Louisiana however is tasteless trash, fries are still good though.

i just ate at FG for the first time ever.

i thought it was great! i feel like their food is a little better than In & Out and a lot better than Wendy's, Carl's Jr. and the other shit-tier places below that

my stomach hurts a bit from eating too much. seriously, i will probably get less food next time.

Not as good as In-n-Out

>> No.4814805

Their fries are really good, their burgers are not. Unless you like nearly tasteless meat on two soggy buns that are somehow flat.

It's my favorite fast food place. If they made their stuff a dollar or two less expensive I'd go there way more often.

It's fast food at sit-down prices. The food is ok but ogrepriced. Cajun fries are good though.
