Entry level stuff is what you want to start with.

Elijah Craig 12 year (bourbon)
Bulleit (bourbon)
Jim Bean (get a cheaper bottle)

Once you get use to these, you can start branching out to other/more whisky. Start easy, and learn to appreciate finer whisky/bourbon/scotch.

I lucked out and got a bottle of this on the cheap. Normally only 12-15 year old shit is in my price range.

I can second EC 12 though.

If you're looking to try bourbon, go for Elijah Craig 12, Elmer T. Lee, W.L. Weller 12 year, or maybe a single barrel Evan Williams or Four Roses. Or Booker's if you want to try a cask-strength bourbon.

For rye, I'd suggest Rittenhouse 100, Whistlepig, or a High West rye.

For Irish, skip Jameson's and go for Redbreast or Tyrconnel.

Scotch kind of depends on whether or not you think you'd like a peaty, smoky whisky (Islay) or a more easy-drinking, fruity whisky (Speyside or Highland).

If it were me, I'd start off with a Glenmorangie, Balvenie, or Aberlour. But if you do want to go for an Islay scotch, Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Laphroaig and Ardbeg are all great. Islays are very popular right now though, and thus kind of overpriced imo.
