Hello /ck/, I have two questions:

How have people's experiences with homemade versions of brand name snack foods gone?

Has anyone tried making home made jaffa cakes, and found it to be similar to the actual product?

I've been wanting to try out jaffa cakes for a while now (in addition to other mainly UK treats) but there's no place near me that has them, and online prices can be crazy, so then I thought I could just try making my own. Found this recipe on the BBC.

The only issue I see having with it is
>Suspend a heatproof bowl over the water (do not allow the base of the bowl to touch the water)
Not sure how I'm going to set that up. Also I'm not the most experienced cook so I'm not entirely sure what "sieved" flour is, but is seems that it's just flour with no clumps.

I've been on a British food kick for a while, since I decided on a whim to try out scotch eggs and loved them.

I could mail you some Jaffa Cakes if you want them.

Amazon was quoting basically 20 bucks for shipping, and I'm pretty strapped for cash. I figure most of the ingredients are fairly cheap so I can get a bunch and make a lot, for less than 20 bucks even.

sieving flour not only gets out any lumps and any foreign matter that might have gotten in, but in decompacts the grains some, so you'll get a slightly less dense finished product.

use a bowl that is bigger than the pan.

...well derp. Here I was thinking of preparing this contraption I have for deep frying which is too big for my pots and performing a balancing act, or just holding it, but that seems much safer.

and also use a teatowel to hold the bowl

I tried making reese's peanut butter cups once. The shape wasn't right, but they tasted mostly good

Me too, but instead of the shape not being right it was more of the chocolate not being soft enough.
I think I didn't add enough cream to the chocolate to soften it up a little since it hardened into ball of rock.

I've been wanting to make hot fries at home since they're fucking delicious, but can never figure it out. The closest I've gotten is taking Cheetos, adding cayenne, and then shaking it up in a bag.
