It depends on the type of macaron!
I made some lavender macarons recently with honey cream that went down a storm.
I'd suggest you experiment with cream, jams and ganaches and work from there. My favourite macarons are salted caramel with a salted caramel filling.

Pretty sure it's considered acceptable to use both interchangeably. I prefer "macaron" myself.
At least they're not calling them "cookies".
