Denmark is full of interesting and good food. Go to a bakery and buy some Napoleon's hats. Try that ultrastrong pirate coin licorice. Find a fast-food place that sells smorgasbord (those tiny tiny delicious sandwiches). They have real awesome potato crips in Denmark and some real good beers. Only thing they don't have is cheap mineral water. Try Buko soft cheese with prawn taste. Try Ymer with cornflakes.

Danish Sandwiches, not just the open ones called Smørrebrød, but any sandwich place in general. The standard is quite high, and the vegetables are fresh.
Show your support for the immigrant horde and by some Döner Kebab, tastes great most places.
Try rye bread with marinated herring with a glass of snaps or akvavit.
Eat frikadeller and notice how we for several hundreds years of viking raids never found the need to bring spices home from the southern parts of Europe.

OK, you have no problem finding food in the stores. In Hillerød you can find a store called Føtex. They have a lot of foods. It is the black pin on the picture.
The green pin on the picture is Jakobs Fisk. It is a store selling fresh fish. I recommend you buying fish in such a store, and tell them you'll use it for sushi. Most Danes understand and talk English.

Few non-scandinavians like the stuff, same goes for rye bread. Have to admit it sounds revolting to mix it with mackarel in tomato sauce (assuming that's the stuff he uses).

It's just a little funny, your spelling. It's called leverpostej, meaning liverpate or similar. Lever på steg would translate to "liver on roast"..so yea.

Oh, I just copy and pasted from how he spelled it. Yeah, it was pretty bad. I tried it, of course, but that was my mistake. The rye bread is pretty good with a little butter. OP didn't mention likes/dislikes, palette, where they're from, but I'm eat anything/everything murican and spend a few weeks there each year...

I found the native food to be a bit "meh". Not that it sucked, it was all good quality and healthy, but its a more practical fare, not something you fly a 1/4 way around the world to dine on.

Of that fare, the bread and cheeses were very good but beware that rye. It looks like a nice pumpernickel, but it is the consistency of fruitcake, immediately absorbs all the moisture in your mouth, and frankly, it has a way too strong taste.

Every single piece of fish I had was excellent. Had several smoked/raw fishies too, all good.

Grab yourself some of their funny-money (I kept a 100dkk bill... Instead of a president on the front it has a big ol fat chicken). Take the money and buy some of the street cart hot dogs.

Lastly, somehow they have some of the best "ethnic" food I've ever eaten. Had the best italian food ever when I was there. Some excellent chinese... And got a chance to try two very interesting places, a Dim Sim restaurant and a tapas bar. Look those up if you've never been, but in a nutshell they're like 20-25 course meals where you can sample an amazing array of things.

Me again, forgot to mention, do NOT waste your time/money on steak while there. Steak is some kind of imported novelty to them so it is super duper expensive. Also, when you ask what cut of meat it is (because you want to make sure your $80 is going for a porterhouse not a sirloin), they have no idea. Steak is steak to them.

Also, if you drink anything other than beer, bring your own. Spirits are jaw-dropping expensive.

> Try that ultrastrong pirate coin licorice

Hehe I had some of that Pirate licorice. Its flavored with anise and ammonium chloride. Yes, ammonium chloride.

Ah one other thing, if you're from murica, try some of the fruits we never import or only import from SA, which is pretty much everything. They seem to be a different species or hybrid and have a different flavor. Had the most delicious oranges and oj while there (suspect they were spanish oranges?).

Danish cuisine isn't very good, although you still have to taste the classic stuff like smorrebrod and such.
What Denmark has, however, is really good fresh ingredients. If you like to cook you'll be delighted. Be sure to check the pork, the Danes eat a lot of that and it's often excellent quality. Also the "curiosities" in the supermarkets, like the chocolate sheets in your pic, are worth checking.
Do you smoke the pipe ? Denmark is an awesome country for pipe smokers.

All the good cuts and competitively priced meat is exported, plenty of great meat is produced in denmark.

All licorice (salty or not) is flavored with anise or fennel. Licorice root itself doesn't have a very strong taste on its own.

The characteristic flavor of those coins is the ammonium chloride, aka Salmiak or Salmiakki. It's common in all scandanavian countries.

Me again. Let's exchange frikadelle recepies.
500g minced calf and pork meat (50/50 mix)
60g flour(wheat will do, but the recipe is best w/ "safir" flour).
1½ teaspoon salt.
1/4 teaspoon pepper.
2 onions (yes, we don't use a lot of onion, blame my mom).
1 egg.
2 dL sødmælk (milk w/ 3.5% fat)
Lots of butter.

Chop the onions into fine pieces.
Mix meat, flour, spices, egg, milk and onion into a tough compund (you know you're there when it looks like fibres when you pull it apart). This will take some time.
Use a spoon to form the frikadeller. Roast on both sides in 4 to 5 minutes with a generous amount of butter.
