He started painting cats for his wife, who had terminal cancer. He kept doing it because it amused people. Then he developed schizophrenia, and over the years they got pretty weird.

It's really fascinating stuff. I don't like looking at his later works anymore, because I feel like I can see how his mind was being twisted. It's a good example of how intimate art can be--how one's work can express things in lieu of words.
