Try Dogfish Head. Any of it, but their IPA's are good.Or:

-Trois Pistols

Really, just take a look for local craft beers.

Get at least one of each of these styles of beer. Recomendations are based on things I see a lot around me (Indianapolis), don't know about you. If you don't have them, just get something from that style. Format is:
>Style - Name (Brewery)

Pale Ale - Osiris (Sun King)
Wheat Ale - 312 (Goose Island)
Amber Ale - Fat Tire (new belgium)
Brown Ale - Tumbler (Sierra Nevada)
Stout - Guiness (take a bloody guess)

Of those five, if you find one or more that you kind of like, get several more of that style. If you don't like any of them, try some other styles; those five are just five very common ones.

>> No.3898282

Honestly, if you're used to mostly watery, flavorless beer (don't get me wrong, I drink a lot of Natural Ice even to this day), then I suggest Guinness Draught. Then upgrade to Blue Moon and Fat Tire. Then try Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

I think after that you could go to higher IBU beers. Darker stouts. That kind of thing. OId Rasputin, Optimator, Rogue Chocolate Stout, etc.

Anyway, I would recommend you check out some of Bell's beers. Oberon, Two Hearted, and Amber are all great.

PBR is actually a decent beer for the price, but thanks to this generation's obsession with image the price has nearly doubled because of the demand. Luckily we get Schlitz Gusto, which only comes in 12oz bottles and 16oz cans, and for the price it's hard to beat.

A few other companies to look for, Lagunitas(seems to be widely available and somewhat cheaper), Clown Shoes(I may be biased, though, since it's local), Dogfish Head(90 minute IPA is an amazing one), Great Divide(yeti imperial stout is pretty awesome), and Founders. Sam Adams is a great transition from shitty macro lagers to solid macro beers before going balls deep into micros/imported.

>IBUs and hop profiles don't mean as much as many brewers emphasize.

What the fuck is this nonsense? Those are scientific, factual ways to describe a beer. If someone is drinking some shit lager, I certainly wouldn't say "hey dude, go drink this 120 IBU DIPA. It's more bitter than anything you've ever tasted, and you'll probably be taken aback by the strong piney flavor, but trust me this is what beer is supposed to taste like." Hop profiles help categorize beers for people who follow this shit and give a fuck, and IBUs can be a great foundation for someone figuring out what they like bitterness-wise. The shit matters, man. Not much to someone just getting into craft beer, but to people that care it's really important.

But as for recommendations for a good starter craft beer: Many people moving from macro lagers to nicer stuff find things like Sierra Nevada pale to be too bitter (understandably). So something that I think could be a good introduction would be a stout, notably an oatmeal stout. It's creamy, smooth, easy to drink. Another good option would be a craft brewery made lager. A lot of breweries have their own version of a lager, and it'll be something you're used to - crisp, lighter bodied, less hoppy than most other styles. Maybe even give a pilsner a shot. I don't know the depths of which your shit beer drinking has gone, but even something like Beck's can be a nice change of pace from American-style "pilsner" lager.

If you see something that says anything like "IBUs: 60," that's probably gonna be more bitter than you're looking for right now. Another anon suggested doing a mixed six-pack: awesome idea. Get a bunch of shit, see what you like. I'm excited for your good beer indoctrination.

>> No.3898867

>>3898765
Agreed Anon, Guinness isn't what it used to be.

They skimped on quality when they really commercialised, and started selling a brand.

Imo, try Murphy's Irish Stout. It's not too strong in terms of ABV, but it's a fine drink that redeems the irish.

>> No.3898990

Homebrew. Learn it, love it. You can modify your recipes over time to try and fit your idea of the "perfect" stout, brown ale, IPA, anything. Once you are familiar with that, it's insanely easy to make cider or wine for more variety. And the best part is, bitches love this shit. They think it's some complex and mysterious hobby when it's really crazy easy. Gives you something nice to break the ice at parties.
