Complain to your city/town housing department. Not like it's an air conditioner or something not technically necessary. He gunna take on another $100 for using the sink next?

people call America a 3rd world country but we are SUE HAPPY and in your specific case what your landlord did is grounds for a massive civil lawsuit since it literally violates almost every facet of the U.S. Constitution.
UNLESS it's in your lease contract and you actually signed that shit without reading it. in which case, I feel a lot of pity for renters

If he gets mad you found a workaround and demands $100 anyway, sue his ass

Contracts do not void law. There is no situation where OP is signing a lease for a living space that is not a living space and it holds up.
Now if it is that they aren't providing a fridge, that could be passable. OP should get a mini fridge for a couple hundred dollars anyway.

Is that why the only apartments in america are overpriced studios with full bathroom and kitchen? maybe wed have less homeless if we had more apartments that was literally just a room with no utilities

I'm saying A basic room would be cheaper than a big loft that needs a window, bedroom, fully equipped bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, laundry, TV, i dunno probably a fuckin balcony too.
Some people are willing to live like that but you don't really get that choice where I am. You either take the fancy shit or you're homeless in the street. its kind of weird.

Housing is fucked because of zoning laws and ladder pulling in the name of "muh property value."
There's fuckloads of land out there to build on and developing is almost always profitable even if you were to slash prices but homeowners vote to fuck over have-nots.
