What kind of knives and sharpeners are good for people who aren't knife-autist enough to learn how to use whetstones and things?
My Mum's knives are all horribly blunt because she puts them in the dishwasher and never gets them sharpened.
I don't know if I'll even be able to convince her to stop putting them in the dishwasher but there's got to be a better option than cheap supermarket stainless steel knives and pull through sharpeners.

There is nothing wrong with putting them in the dishwasher unless she has some kind of soap that dissolves metal
Which isn't a soap that I'm aware of
Just buy cheap-ass Cuisinart knives and throw the bad ones away
Get a steel for maintenance, it will make you feel better when you have to use her trash knives
A real steel, not some diamond shit, all metal, spend more on the steel than any knife

I feel like Dune has affected this board

You could get pic related which is easy to use. I have the Lansky and it's pretty effective.
Idahone and A.G. Russell also makes crock sticks, but they're hard to get outside of USA.
There's also the rolling ones by HORL, but they're pricey and has the edge-side facing up.

I remember some /ck/ guy actually used a high-power microscope and found that the dishwasher actually sharpens blades.

if spending $150-200 on a sharpener is not an issue, buy one of these

My mom and stepdad asked me for sharpener advice since I'm known as a "knife guy". I told them to get one of these since at least they'd use it. Stepdad immediately vetoed that and ordered an expensive wooden case full of natty stones. Shockingly, it has never been used and their knives are always dull when I'm over.

it's the heat that's the problem, not the water or the soap
