Yeah, they're a bit of spicy fun.
I mostly prefer to go a little bit below that on the strength scale (perhaps a madras?) but vindaloo is good from time to time.
Also, if you make it yourself then you can adjust the fire level. I've got an awesome recipe for duck vindaloo that isn't particularly strong at all. (The actual defining features of a proper vindaloo are vinegar and potato.)
