Any alcoholi/ck/s in the house?

I have a sort of a liquor cabinet that I built up as gifts from friends. Never really drank hard liquor, always been a beer guy. I started passing some nights by drinking whiskey and playing video games. Made them last but I emptied a few bottles after some months. Now that I know I enjoy some whiskey and scotch could anyone recommend me some alcohol? It doesnt have to be potent but I would appreciate one with good flavor. I want to develop my pallette. Picture not necessarily related, wouldnt let me post without a picture.

my favorite is 4 roses single barrel. evan williams single barrel is also pretty good without being too pricey. if you are okay with spending a bit more, i really like the aged hibikis, they have a bunch of different types. if you're interested in scotch, go to a local fancy bar where bartenders have moustaches and wear vests and shit, and give the bartender like $50 and tell him to educate you on scotch. they'll show you a bunch of different kinds and varieties and you'll be able to find a kind you like. then get a bottle of that. it's an education you'll carry with you for the rest of your life.

Cheap blended scotch, cheap irish whiskey, bourbon, and most Canadian whiskey is all just corn swill.

Good scotch will be 100% malted barley. Good Canadian whiskey will be 100% rye. Bourbon has to be 51% corn by law, but the good stuff will have rye and/or wheat as well. I don't know about Irish whiskey.

If you enjoyed the Canadian stuff, try some American rye and see how you feel about it. Wild Turkey is technically bourbon but it's rye-heavy in the mashbill and it's usually pretty cheap. You want the Wild Turkey 101 specifically.

Honestly just try a bunch of stuff, see what you like. You don't have to go for the really expensive shit while you're just trying to get a feel for things but some good starters in my opinion would be like

Wild Turkey
Knob Creek (both their bourbon and rye are good)
Bulleit
Four Roses
If you can get your hands on some Mellow Corn it's a pretty interesting thing to try compared to more traditional whiskey
Monkey Shoulder is a pretty decent affordable Scotch
If you want to try some different Irish whiskey I like Powers, it's definitely a step up from Jameson.

That's only like 20% correct, there's a lot of differences between the way different types of whiskey are distilled and aged outside of what the mash is made from, and there's also a bunch of variation in mashbills even within any given country. American whiskey isn't all mostly corn, bourbon is by definition but American rye whiskey is as you might've guessed mostly rye.

also i agree with this. Focus on quality, drinking straight liquor or high effort cocktails and gaining more refined tastes. It makes you look classier and will reduce your overall alcohol consumption versus drinking cheap shit or beer. Harsher and shittier liquor is easier to overdrink with paradoxically because you either mix it or chase it instead of savoring the flavor that you paid extra for.

I lost 10lbs since I went /whiskyonly/. It's also a much more enjoyable buzz for me somehow. Rum, vodka, et. al just don't hit the same way as a rye or scotch. Some science nerd could probably figure out why but i frankly dont care.

Can anyone recommend a Canadian whisky that is actually good? I've tried Crown Royal, Kirkland (Costco brand) Canadian blended whisky which just tasted exactly like Crown, and an old bottle of MacNAUGHTON from my Grandparents cupboard that I found after they passed away. Honestly the Crown, and Kirkland tasted like shit to me; the best way to describe them was like flat cream soda with a hint of wet dog. The MacNAUGHTON actually tasted pretty good, more like a Scotch with a stronger rye spiciness, but the bottle was definitely old, like late 80's to early 90's. Pic related is the exact bottle if anyone can date it.

Those are the only 3 Canadian whiskeys I've had that aren't trash, and they just happen to be 100% rye. Don't be fooled, "rye" is a generic term in Canadian whiskey, a bottle can straight up say "rye" on it, and not have any rye in the mash. Well today I bought eight bottles of bourbon/rye. I also picked up two 50ml scotch bottles, Glenlivet 12 and Johnnie Walker Black. I tried the JW just now and I can recognize some similar flavors from the Laphroaig, so I suppose it has something peated blended in. It's not bad but again not really a flavor I'm terribly fond of. I don't think this is any worse than the Laphroaig to be quite honest. Maybe my tastebuds are not refined enough to understand what makes this shit and what makes the Laphroaig better. Will try the Glenlivet momentarily.

Not the ABV, but rather the flavour yeah. It's somewhat unique and medicinal so might not be to the taste of someone who otherwise would enjoy peated.

I only know Islay ones well, so can't really recommend much, but if you'd like to try that again then give a go to Ardbeg Uigeadail which is 54% ABV with strong fruit notes after the peat

Tried the Glenlivet. Flavors are mild and subtle, did not detect peat. Relatively pleasant to drink. The trouble with this, and everything else I've tried is that it's so weak in ABV I can down it like a beer almost. I want whiskey to be somewhat a struggle, like it is with higher proof bourbon. That keeps me from overdrinking and helps me keep it in moderation. It reminds me of the time I tried vodka, which is an evil drink, though this is not as bad in that regard. I have to say I just really like the flavor profiles you get in bourbon, the vanilla, spices, caramel, etc. This doesn't do it for me.
>>19967804
The increased ABV of the Ardbeg bottle is appealing and might be something I would like more, but it's hard to drop $100 on something I might not like. When I whittle down my bourbon collection some I might pull the trigger on some high proof scotch. For Irish I see there's a cask strength Redbreast. Seems like anything high proof from that side of the Atlantic carries a heavy price tag.

As far as non-whiskey drinks, I'm a fan of a lot of gin based cocktails. The Botanist gin is really good, especially in a gin and tonic with elderflower tonic water, lime juice and mint. My go to for most other gin cocktails is Drumshanbo. Both are definitely an improvement over Bombay Sapphire. I'd recommend you step up your cocktail game in general. Making margaritas this weekend and I need some help. I'm not a huge fan of them, but my wife requested them for a get together and I'd like some of your marg recipes and suggestions on tequila. I'm looking for mid(ish) shelf here because I'm not in love with the people coming over and they refused to drink scotch.
Most of what I can find is thus:
2oz tequila
1-1.5oz Cointreau
1oz fresh lime
0-1oz simple syrup (to the taste of the drinker)
What can you guys add/subtract?

worst part about the dwindling cooperage industry is the wood used. the good shit is long gone as the trees cut 60-80 years ago were 200-300+ years old and nowadays it's less than 150 years on average. anything older than that will never see the commercial market.

Bourbons isn't made to create barrels for scotch. The barrels are unusable afterwards and would get thrown in the dump so they get sold cheap.

Don't mess with the cointreau or simple syrup. Margaritas are incredibly forgiving and easy to make tasty.

Use 1ish fresh limes to a shot or two of tequila and a little agave syrup. That's it. Shake it all up with ice. It should be tangy, but not overly so. If it is too tangy add a little more agave syrup. Salt rim is nice.

Tapatio blanco is an excellent and relatively inexpensive tequila.

You can always compare them with the ladies. Lime juice + agave syrup is best for higher quality tequila. The minimal ingredients lets the flavor from the tequila show better.

You can always add more agave syrup if they prefer a sweeter drink.

If they like daiquiris they will like marg without oranfe liquoe

Get the little bitty shot bottles. Just go to any dedicated liquor store, and load up on the little babies. Get ALL of them, one for every brand and category. Then try em all. Smell em, try a little by itself, then in a mixed drink. Boom, you now have experience with all the bottom shelf and mid shelf drinks. Rum, gin, vodka, whiskey, do them all.

Then you will know what categories of booze you like/hate, and from here you start working your way up the shelf in quality for the ones you like, from cheap shit to the expensive shit.

Alright be real with me, I drink 1 to 4 beers a night, but considering the ABV it comes out to more like 2 to 6 units of alcohol a night. Or some mixture of wine or spirits. I've been doing this almost every day for about 10 years. Here and there I'll take a night off. The biggest break I've taken is probably a week. I can take 5 days off and suffer no symptoms at all. I'll do this every now and then, mostly to cut down on calories. So considering all of this, am I actually putting myself at serious risk of permanent damage? Can I keep doing this for the rest of my life, like my father has?

jesus. christ, you're me to a T. I'm pretty sure yes you're doing damage to yourself, have a problem and need to find a way to quiet. Because I'm in the same position of kind of assuming it's what's wrong with me while also at the same time constantly grasping for more convoluted explanations for why my life is shit so I can justify continuing to drink.

funnily I'm starting low dose naltrexone tomorrow because reasons and even though it's a microdose I'm still kind of hoping it nukes the pleasure I get from drinking and manages to break the cycle. Even though another half of me hopes it fails so I can keep on with my useless, fattening, life-shortening, liver-poisoning, sleep-destroying, skin-ruining habit.

rum is easily over oaked due to climate and the reason age statements arent identical to whiskey is because they need to blend in younger rums with some older to make the older stuff palatable and teaspooning is a valid method of blending.

the real rub with rum aside from the 3rd world production aspect and before the current market price gouging is column still crap being grouped in with pot still in terms of price and quality when its cheapest to produce and lightest on flavor.

in a blend, sure. as longs it's done in moderation, but it hardly ever is because why would they nuke their profit margins, especially during the tail end of a boom?
