I've also been eyeing that big chen sheng hao sampler they have on their site. the one I tried from the sample box was some real punchy stuff, had to really dial in my brewing to control the bitterness. the instant sweetness followed by bitterness was a great contrast. that cake is definitely out of my budget though

I didn't care too much for it at first, but then I noticed I hear chinese flute playing whenever I open the bag or take a sip of eot secret forest white. Don't expect miracles, a 300 gram bag is a sample. Looking for them to deliver is the problem, white teas are about being there in the moment. They're subtle and fickle until you stop thinking about them and take the right sip.

I've had random shit that delivered upfront but I couldn't tell you what it was.

Yeah, pretty good in a very subtle way. Also on the borderline between slightly pricey and expensive as shit at 40¢ a gram, white tea tends to be pay to win. 2 bucks per isn't uncommon if you want a superlative experience. Old wild like this is cheating the system, you get the flute without paying for the rest of the orchestra to do very little the whole time.

I hope the snoozefest isn't too boring despite the name

I'm also almost out of 9978, might re-purchase, though I've noticed it brews out quicker / needs more material than most other ripes. the flavor is really nice though
as far as Haiwan on fullchea goes, I was considering the Remote Mountain, Old Tree, 908 and the new Gongbing cake they added. bit hard to choose, they make a lot of stuff and barely any of it has reviews online

White tea is my favorite. I find bai hao yin zhen tends to be the most complex and multilayered tasting whites. I find bai mu dan kind of gross tasting. Gong mei and shou mei have a lot of variation in their production and thus can be radically different in their characters, overall they taste simpler. I tend to gravitate towards darker leaves - when I buy whites I look for lots of browns, blacks, and darker colored leaves. Material with lots of green present has a different flavor that isn't my favorite. Objectively the best white tea I ever had was a bai hao yin zhen from fengqing county. My current favorite is an aged gong mei that tastes like sweet paper

>I had that issue with the couple of YS house ripes I tried, if they pretty much taste like factory cakes what's the point?
yeah, my thinking is that boutique ripes will never beat the top big factories for value as far as classic, balanced ripe goes. that's what the factories are best at and the economy of scale is in their favour

Does anyone have thoughts if W2T's "Red Loon" cake is worth it, or should I just buy 2x Snoozefests (or something else)? Yes, I still think it's an easy pick up for the price. A bit different from your average semi-aged raw experience, the cigar humidor association is very obvious for me. Also reminds me of some tobacco perfumes like Burberry London, maybe more woody and without the spices.
The 2005 Jia Ji I got is more of a typical semi-aged raw in comparison, there is some smoke but doesn't really have the evocative cigar magic.

FOMO exists in all sorts of niche consumer markets, and that includes boutique tea products. Sales will come again, and new seasons bring new products, so I wouldn't stress too much about it. What is more important is taking the time to appreciate and enjoy the stuff you do get. That said, if you really want to get into it, it's worth trying so now while there are sales. You could even just get one of the Fa Zhan He cakes and some 2023 Yingpan shan red, and the total should be about $39 shipped, so pretty good for some quality stuff multiple anons have praised.

An aside, even if you're uncertain about pu'er at first, don't be afraid to keep giving it a few tries. Whether that be changing how you make it or trying other products, pu'er as a category is really broad, and so can be the quality and nuance of said products.

The wet leaf coalesces into a more coherent aroma - sungold tomato (as so many young shengs seem to me) with a hint of added sweetness.
Using 6.8g/100ml, the tea is brewing up a nice golden hue and settling into a more savory flavor profile. Some pleasant mouth drying effects and very needed cha qi considering I just woke up after sleeping for 11 hours, slightly hungover, not having eaten in the last 13 hours or so.

IMO, they are pretty similar. I could definitely taste the difference between them, but it was pretty subtle. The regular has a kind of hay/ straw note that stands out and doesn't mesh well with the other flavors that the Special Grade doesn't have. I was pretty disappointed with the Special Grade, I don't think it's worth the premium. What's your budget anon? Tang fang liang zi is good for his price meaning it has qualities of more expensive cakes, powerful mouthfeel and sweetness after first "hit" of bitterness while drinking it mostly associated with more expensive and "known" areas. It has a strong taste and it's not boring to drink so you can adjust to your own taste while breewing it for more or less bitterness but will have a good taste anyway. Fa zhan he might be the best price value balance on the site for low budget but it won't taste as good as ba ka noy whatever you do it with. for full cake the tang fang liang zi would be my max price right now. it does sound nice, I'll definitely sample it, might just have to wait until spring
the more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that I should wait with the sampling. I'm a bit sceptical of 20 gram samples in general. I think 50-100 grams is the minimum to really get to know a tea as finicky and dynamic as raw pu-erh. it's too bad that FarmerLeaf doesn't offer in-between sizes
>>19936966
yeah when you're starting out it's definitely better to sample than end up with a cake you dislike because of personal preference
but once you know what you like already and how much it should cost, you can just go all-in. I only buy whole cakes of ripe pu-erh, but for raw I am still a bit more hesitant, there is more to consider

Quick update since people are buying from farmerleaf now, the Miyun tastes a lot better now. I still don't think I would get it at the current price but it's an acceptable Jingmai tea. It's been hanging out with a 69% boveda pack, so maybe it just needed to rest after shipping or something, although I'd be really surprised if that was the case.

usually I do 1/3rd to half cup by volume for a 120ml cup, then around 10 infusions. a lot like gong-fu proportions really, except with a bombilla and the convenience of taking a sip and then waiting if it's too weak, like grandpa style. traditional mate brewing is the best of both worlds

For the stuffed tangerine thing. Rip the skin off, brew about half the tea at once with just a few small pieces on the skin, like 2 or 3 1cm by 1cm squares of it, if you use all the skin its just too strong. Although I picked this up when it initially went on sale, I finally cracked into my Fa Zhan He. Lurking here, it seemed to be the cheaper FL cake of the Spring. Ended up in everybody's carts. Mine too, but I also got some other productions, then got distracted over the Summer touring aged Xiaguans.
Anyway, I'm only a few infusions in, but the I get the hype. This is a solid tea for 11.8 cents per gram. There's a sweetness in the aroma and flavor. Not quite citrus but tangy like it. There's also some green tea character, but that's pretty broad. I don't know my greens as well as I should. It's very soft, easy going cake. FL lists it as a having a bite, but I don't really feel that. It's right where I want a young sheng daily drinker to be.
Damn good tea deserving of the praise it got this year. Better than Bangwai Small Trees, but not Bangwai Big Trees. Different enough that I'm glad I have all three. I also have Huey Wa and the Jinmai Miyun that I picked from and will dig into this weekend.o

Puerh storage info in pastebin.
Get some kind of sealed plastic container. Make sure it doesn't smell like plastic or it will make your tea smell like plastic. I use an old cooler and 58% boveda packs. Plastic cambro food storage bins are also popular. Or if you want to keep it simple buy a few one gallon mylar bags and keep the tea sealed in those with boveda packs.
If you just bought some small quantities of tea and they came in foil bags just keep them in those with the bags sealed up tight and the tea will be fine, you don't really need to worry about storage untill you have a couple loose cakes.

or masala chai= black tea+ buy masala chai mix from indian stores+milk+ little palm sugar.

Did anyone buy anything from Yee-on/"the vampire"? I just saw he has a 20% off sale...already bought from FL and W2T, but I've wanted to try his wares for a while.
