No more pretentious than the guys who call you a pleb for playing video games on an xbox or listening to music with airpods. I like coffee, I pursue the best cup possible because I don’t want to waste my time eating/drinking things that taste like ass, simple as. I spend the money for decent alcohol because if I’m gonna dump poison in my body it might as well taste good. Some people take it too far, but you could apply that to anything. I share the sentiment but I also think it should come within your means.
I've noticed this weird trend where the ones most likely to cultivate these very expensive hobbies (be it coffee, or alcohol, or teas, premium chocolates, you name it) are middle class people for which the expense is a non-trivial hit that makes them go from "Could save one grand every month" to "Lives month to month".

Of course this will call the counter-argument that "And save money for what? You gotta enjoy at least something in life", but I wasn't trying to argument against hobbies.
I just find it odd that the class most likely to pick up this sort of very involved, expensive kind of hobby is also the kind of person whose financial and life prospects are hit the hardest by it.

Coffee is like the audio space, where many of the enthusiasts are insuffable and extremely willing to part with lots of money, but also the cheap faggots are just as insufferable yelling at anyone wanting to put more money in it than them, as if all coffee (or headphones in the audio example) taste the exact same and everyone has the same limited tolerance of the time it takes to make coffee. Not him, but coffee as a hobby does not need to be expensive. For example I have a 17€ French press, a 20€ coffee grinder, and just some random pot to boil water. My coffee is only marginally more expensive than "normal" supermarket coffee, but trust me there's a night and day difference.

I think you're picturing the average coffee enjoyer as some guy with 3 expensive espresso machines and some industrial grade coffee grinder. Coffee is one of the cheapest hobbies you can have nowadays.

Honestly I have no fucking idea anymore.
The internet has gaslit me into thinking Americans can't just pay "what's on the tag" in literally no area of life.
Get an item from the store shelf? VAT is only added during check out and costs more than what's written.
Eat outside? You have to pay more, but not some flat gratuity "for service", you have to pay 10-20% more on the total value of the meal (?????) instead.
Get your hair cut? You have to tip because...why???

I keep telling myself I must've been gaslit by the Internet's constant "do Americans really?" posts, but then a burger friend will casually mention "Oh fortunately I found a good hotel for my trip in the end, with tipping it only came out to etc etc" and after that my mind turns into static just thinking YOU TIP AT A HOTEL????

>pleb for playing video games on an xbox
I don't understand why people defend buying a worse PC with a limited library and paying extra to use their own internet connection. It isn't even a matter of pretentiousness, my PC doesn't even have a case I have the parts stacked against the wall and a paperclip jammed into a separate power source for the video card so it starts without being attached to a motherboard - every part is cheap as fuck but runs just great. The result is I can play almost any game from the last 40 years and if I feel like having a console experience I can just use an HDMI cord and a 360 controller. No point whatsoever to use a console, literally zero justification, it's just doing something worse because you're a monkey that can't think.

>coffee tastes like ass
Nta but it’s possible to be pretentious even though you have garbage taste. A suburban iPad kid who only eats organic chicken nuggets and Annie’s Mac and Cheese probably thinks that shit is divine. How would you react if he looked at a meal you put a lot of effort into and said it was shit then went back to ending his nuggets? Probably nothing. You’d probably just think “damn, that kid’s retarded,” and go back to your meal. That’s basically how people who import beans feel when you guys get so bothered by good coffee that you feel the need to share how unbothered you are by it.

>> No.19810774

>>19810740
The whole reason why coffee fags exist is because of how volatile the compounds in coffee beans are so a small change like temperature or grind size can make your coffee go from tasting celestial to tasting like dog piss. That's why most people think coffee tastes like shit because they only tasted it when it's made by wagies or something.

Posters on this site tend to hate people who indicate that there’s depth to something you might be interested in, like coffee. Hoffman comes out the gate swinging in that regard. All his videos dump coffee knowledge onto the viewer. I don’t really watch him that often because I was a barista for five years until I went to college. If I didn’t know anything about coffee, and I saw one of his vids, I like to believe I’d think “hey this guy knows a lot about coffee” and try to absorb what I can from his video, but the 4chan response to people who know what they’re talking about is often flippant rage for some reason, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the average poster here has this guy living rent free in their head. I don’t know why you’d get invested in something like coffee if you don’t want to watch at least one spindly twink explain something you don’t know once in a while. If you just want something to sip on while you drive to work, just get a decent automatic drip and never look back.
