Thread for discussing goffee and goffee-related topics.

The moka pot is the goffee litmus test edition.

Don't bother breathing if you can't make a good moka brew. Goffee is not pay2win.

Carbonic maceration is not the same a yeast inoculation. The latter definitely is great for mediocre coffee merchants, but I believe the former has its merits depending on the terroir/varietal.

Longer ratio=more water to pull out more goodies. High flow=no choking or channeling to hinder extraction. My default is 16.5g/65g in sub 20s. Welcome to the world of turbos, they're the future of espresso. Wait until you get some bottom papers so you can grind finer without clogging but maintain that high flow. Now dial in to your particular taste with that as a starting point. You might like even longer ratios. Here's a few youtube videos showing how this shit kind of developed over the past few years.

>have guests?

but the actual answer is my guests usually have had their coffee before arriving and i have had mine before they arrived.
but if i ask them or they ask me then then i will just split the yield between us.
especially because the amount of coffee i call 1 cup is way too much for most people so even half of my regular cup is more than enough for them. depends on the guest but sometimes we will discuss our techniques or i will buy a number of different bags to try with them and having a sort of tasting session with them over the course of several hours where casually setting up and brewing and prepping for the next brew will happen sort of on autopilot while engaged in conversation.

Aeropress's older cousin. Also fairly cheap, has worse filtration than an aeropress but you can get all glass ones in case you worry about plastics, and it makes bigger batches. Also good for tea.

>When we read, another person thinks for us: we merely repeat his mental process. In learning to write, the pupil goes over with his pen what the teacher has outlined in pencil: so in reading; the greater part of the work of thought is already done for us. This is why it relieves us to take up a book after being occupied with our own thoughts. And in reading, the mind is, in fact, only the playground of another’s thoughts. So it comes about that if anyone spends almost the whole day in reading, and by way of relaxation devotes the intervals to some thoughtless pastime, he gradually loses the capacity for thinking; just as the man who always rides, at last forgets how to walk. This is the case with many learned persons: they have read themselves stupid.

>Reading is merely a surrogate for thinking for yourself; it means letting someone else direct your thoughts. Many books, moreover, serve merely to show how many ways there are of being wrong, and how far astray you yourself would go if you followed their guidance. You should read only when your own thoughts dry up, which will of course happen frequently enough even to the best heads; but to banish your own thoughts so as to take up a book is a sin against the holy ghost; it is like deserting untrammeled nature to look at a herbarium or engravings of landscapes.

>When you find human society disagreeable and feel yourself justified in flying to solitude, you can be so constituted as to be unable to bear the depression of it for any length of time, which will probably be the case if you are young. Let me advise you, then, to form the habit of taking some of your solitude with you into society, to learn to be to some extent alone even though you are in company; not to say at once what you think, and, on the other hand, not to attach too precise a meaning to what others say; rather, not to expect much of them, either morally or intellectually, and to strengthen yourself in the feeling of indifference to their opinion, which is the surest way of always practicing a praiseworthy toleration. If you do that, you will not live so much with other people, though you may appear to move amongst them: your relation to them will be of a purely objective character. This precaution will keep you from too close contact with society, and therefore secure you against being contaminated or even outraged by it. Society is in this respect like a fire—the wise man warming himself at a proper distance from it; not coming too close, like the fool, who, on getting scorched, runs away and shivers in solitude, loud in his complaint that the fire burns.

>But it is common knowledge that religions don’t want conviction, on the basis of reasons, but faith, on the basis of revelation. And the capacity for faith is at its strongest in childhood: which is why religions apply themselves before all else to getting these tender years into their possession. It is in this way, even more than by threats and stories of miracles, that the doctrines of faith strike roots: for if, in earliest childhood, a man has certain principles and doctrines repeatedly recited to him with abnormal solemnity and with an air of supreme earnestness such as he has never before beheld, and at the same time the possibility of doubt is never so much as touched on, or if it is only in order to describe it as the first step towards eternal perdition, then the impression produced will be so profound that in almost every case the man will be almost incapable of doubting this doctrine as of doubting his own existence, so that hardly one in a thousand will then possess the firmness of mind seriously and honestly to ask himself: is this true?

It depends on your moka and coffee.

I usually grind slightly over the espresso range but for some coffees like pic related I go finer down to the espresso range (1.5.0 on JX Pro S), with this setting I’m close to choking the moka but as long as it works and the goffee tastes good I’m ok with it.

I got my moka pot as a student 15 years ago to make "espresso". When I started getting into coffee I put it in the cupboard and got a v60. These days im a middle aged fatcat and have all brewing methods available. I take the moka pot out when I have a bean I want to try it with or to get variety. Twice per month or so. I know the usual tricks and can make a good cup of coffee with it. I dunk on it here a lot because its impractical (forget it if you have guests) and niche. I also love the moka sperg that ensues
