I think that happens more when someone is just starting to educate themselves about something. If they do that online then they probably find someone with that extreme viewpoint to listen to first, but will moderate their thoughts over time.

Even with keto, everyone I know who used it to lose weight eventually realized it's just junk food that was the problem, and they start eating healthy carbs instead.

>carbmerchant is seething about keto on /ck/ all day every day
The truth is that carbs aren't inherently bad. The problem with both the adherents and the detractors of keto is that they think its the "one true diet", and treat it accordingly. The truth is that it exists to be a solution to a very specific problem: diabetes or pre-diabetes and the obesity and other problems that come with it. Diabetics lose insulin sensitivity. This causes hightened insulin responses to food that goes on for longer. Having insulin in your blood prevents access to body fat. Restricting carbs and to a lesser extent protein gets you to a point where you can metabolize body fat and eventually regain insulin sensitivity. That's it. If you have a healty metabolism you don't need to worry about carbs, if you don't restricting them could be a solution. For some reason diets are more controversial than religion in the modern world and people can't wait to start tribal wars over them.

>>19395935
one of the biggest problems is that food nowadays is so much lower in nutrients than it used to be and it's bigger so you need to eat so much food to ger the nutrients you need, and most carbs especially modern bread are mostly to fill you up and not very good for you so you can pretty much avoid carbs and still get a balanced diet because of how much you need to eat overall. i'm not keto but i never just go and have some bread or base meals around carbs, if i make a meal it's going to be meat, eggs, dairy, and vegetables as the main focus, and if it needs to be balanced out i might make rice or potatoes or whatever. it's not that carbohydrates are inherently dangerous but the average american doesn't realize how much they actually eat that is just carbs and not particularly healthy carbs either

>> No.19396331

bananas are carbs!?

>> No.19396366

Reminder that "keto" dates back to the same era of the "black coffee, cigarettes, and half a grapefruit" diet, as well as the "all you can eat cabbage soup diet". It probably would have died out 30 years ago if Oprah didn't make it popular again with soccer moms in the 90's. The irony is that Oprah wasn't even about keto; she just lost a lot of weight by cutting bread out of her diet because she would go out to dinner and eat three baskets of bread before the meal arrived. It's a dumb confluence of circumstances where people think that some extreme diet working for one person means it's going to work for everyone, or even be healthy.

Virtually everyone who swears by some extreme fad diet are projecting. They were typically fat kids with no will power, and then came across the latest bro-science bullshit in a magazine or on ticktock and they took to it like it was their new religion, and occasionally it actually helped them reach a healthy weight. Now they literally can't comprehend anyone else being healthy if they don't follow that exact same diet, just like religious fanatics believe that all the non-believers are inherently evil people who lead meaningless lives. That's also the entire /fit/:/ck/ dichotomy in a nutshell. 90% of /fit/ are fatter and unhealthier than anyone on /ck/, but they've come to believe that they have to eat a billion proteins with nothing but broccoli and oats or whatever and anyone who does otherwise is "never going to make it". It's pure projection, except most of /fit/ haven't actually made it, and just like looking at other half naked dudes and fantasizing about one day looking like them. It's like how people who live in trailer parks loved Trump because the one thing they have in their life is the idea that they too can become a "billionaire" one day too, and anyone trying to take that away from them is just a big meannie.

The idea that people overeat because the food is less nutritionally dense is not true. It sounds like it makes a lot of sense but there's not any evidence or justification for this. Micronutrients do not have a detectable flavor except for being bitter and unpalatable in huge doses.

It's also not true that food in general is less nutritionally dense. Yes the vegetables are less nutritious because the soil today is completely spent, but most people today get most of their nutrition from artificial fortification. In the US companies are required by law to put vitamins in bread, milk, rice, breakfast cereal, fast food, and other kinds of goyslop. This is so black people don't die from subsisting entirely on Froot Loops and Doritos. Make of it what you will, but people today have extremely low rates of nutrient deficiency compared to the past. Nutrition is basically inversely related to how fat the population is.

Joe Rogan had a farmer on his podcast who was very anti-mainsteam agriculture, his whole deal was about regenerative farming and how eating meat is actually good for the environment if you grow it correctly. And he also said the same explanation about how nitrogen fertilizer and bad farming practices are wringing all the nutrients out of the soil. And I also heard this Indian swami guy saying the same explanation one time on a different forum.

So I'm open to getting redpilled on this topic but you need to give me a little more of a convincing argument.

https://chriskresser.com/depletion-of-soil-and-what-can-be-done/
Here's an article with citations which explains the mechanisms by which the soil becomes depleted and why this results in reduced nutrients in plants. I can't find the exact study you're asking for after a cursory Google search but I don't think the idea of soil depletion seems very controversial. It seems like pretty much all the mainstream sources and "alternative" sources agree that it exists and why it happens.
I believe you that modern commercial varieties of vegetables are worse for you than the old ones, but it doesn't seem to be the case that we shouldn't worry about the soil at all.
>>19399129
Dude you're really overcorrecting here. I agree that people shouldn't lean on the credentials of others when those people are saying things that fly in the face of logic, evidence, and reason. Especially when the stakes are high. For example, it's obvious to anyone with a brain that the covid vaccinations caused more harm than good, and that they were only authorized and pushed by the government because the FDA is completely captured by the pharmaceutical industry. People who trusted the science and got the vaccine are cattle.
But in this case, we're talking about a relatively mundane and niche topic which I don't have any personal experience with and which isn't that important. Scientists in a number of mainstream publications say that vegetables have less nutrients because the soil is bad. I have no means to produce an original opinion on the topic, I have never been provided with data to the contrary, and the guy disagreeing with me can't even provide a reasoned counterargument. So why shouldn't I believe it?

>they don't need soil at all
of course they dont smoothbrain, you can grow leftover lettuce in water. That doesn't mean it has hardly any nutrients/enzymes that are gonna extend your life or make you healthy at all.
This is why plants that make it naturally in adverse conditions are the golden standard but thats barely even possible on our planet now

This all stems from people relying on prepackaged and fast foods rather than relying on their own cooking skills using whole ingredients. When these people say "carbs are bad" they are talking about corn syrup laden grocery store breads and mcdonalds french fries because that's all they know. It's like how a person's thoughts are limited by the constraints of their language. They've never baked their own bread from scratch or cooked a dinner using a whole chicken, fresh vegetables, and whole grains so they don't understand that bread made from whole ingredients in your own kitchen is perfectly fine. They are scrambling to find SOMETHING to blame their poor health on, and within their highly processed diets, carbs are the most heavily processed. Even still, they're failing to realize that it's actually their entire diet that's the issue.

I kind of doubt he didn't continue his old eating habits off camera. I don't even like the keto diet and think it has flaws but blaming his later strokes on that makes it seem like you just have something personal against keto.

Keto proponents can never give a reason why you would want to cut out carbs completely, when all successful athletes eat carbs to fuel their performance. I tried keto myself for a few months and saw my performance in the gym deteriorate. Why would I artificially limit my progress like that?

Highly processed foods, which have been shown to increase total amount of calories consumed. And any diet leads to weight loss as long as they're excluded.

Yeah but all the people in this thread saying bread/rice/potatoes/fruit make you fat simply doesn't align with history. Processed foods have increased yes, but the only major food groups that have alongside that is meat and dairy

>> No.19407367

>>19407285
Diets higher in meat and dairy still lead to weight loss as long as processed food is reduced. And you have groups of people like the Inuit and the Maasai who get most of their calories from animal products but aren't all obese. Processed food is addictive, low nutrition, and high in calories, the worst food you can eat for health, and people are eating a lot of it.
