What's your madeleine? For me, it's pork lau lau.

L&L isn't great, but it's one of the few places on the mainland that serves lau lau, so I almost always get that. The pic in the OP is a number 19 with a side of kimchi. In Hawaii you wouldn't typically add any extra sauces to the place other than putting shoyu on the rice.

Alternately, if you want to go with something really common in Hawaii but hard to find on the mainland, I'd try the saimin, maybe with a side of manapua, and then either banana lumpia or malasadas.

In Proust's Remembrance of Things Past the protagonist eats a madeleine cookie at one point and is briefly transported back to his childhood. A "madeleine" is basically a food that is so familiar and has so many strong associations connected with it for you that the mere taste or smell can trigger an involuntary memory of an earlier time in your life, particularly a nostalgic one from childhood. It's what the titular scene from Ratatouille is based on.

That's not even remotely true, even for Hawaii. Not being able to eat at a "Hawaiian" restaurant because you're allergic to pineapple is like not being able to eat at a deli because you're allergic to pickles; for the most part it's just a side thing you can always ask to be left out. Coconut is primarily only found in desserts. Avocados are still expensive so it's not like kitchens are throwing them in everything willy-nilly unless it's an essential part of the dish. And bananas may be everywhere, but you rarely see them in restaurants aside from, again, desserts.

It's the cross contamination factor. Last time I was there, I tried to eat the stuff I could at a recommended restaurant, and I almost died even though I was assured there was no coconut, no pineapple. Best to not even risk it at this point.

It's typically butt/shoulder, just like you'd use for pulled pork, but I guess some people use belly. You typically add an extra chunk of pork fat, along with some butterfish and salt. Then it's wrapped in luau, which are taro leaves. They're a kind of leafy green like collards or chard, but probably closest to spinach in flavor - though luau has a distinct flavor and you can't really substitute anything else and get the same result. It's then all wrapped in ti leaves (what she's wearing here >>19344018) and steamed.

You can't eat the ti leaves, but they impart some flavor, kind of like corn husks in tamales, and it's usually served still in the ti leaves so that you unwrap it at the table and all the flavors come out (the ti leaves are already removed in the OP). It's basically a moist, tender pork and greens dish, that's a little salty and a little fishy, in a good way. It pairs really well with kalua pork, which is smokey. For me it's the luau and ti leaves that really make the dish unique, and if you can't get both those ingredients you shouldn't even bother trying.

I bet L&L just uses aluminum foil, which is why it isn't served with the ti leaves. It's okay, but there's definitely something missing.

Those are legit answers. A madeleine is typically something really mundane. Even in the movie they call ratatouille "peasant food" and think the rat is crazy for serving it to the pretentious food critic. I never ate tuna noodle casserole growing up, but the girl I dated for most of my 20s was from Minnesota and would make it occasionally. I still don't really ever eat it, but if I happen to be somewhere and have a taste it always reminds me of her. It has to be made from mostly all panty/freezer shit like canned tuna, cream of mushroom, dry pasta, frozen peas, bread crumbs, and then maybe some pre-shredded cheddar. I kind of want to make it now. It's not very good, but it reminds me of that cunt and how horrible my life got after she broke up with me just because I wasn't ready to get married and start popping out kids.

I don't think I've ever ordered musubi from a restaurant. Maybe if L&L was on my way to work, or I could just buy them from the hot food section at 7-11 or Foodland like in Hawaii I'd be doing it a couple times a week. But I'm not going into a restaurant and paying $4 a pop for some pre-made convenience food I can make at home.

I have no problem mixing crispy food with something wet, but katsu curry just never did it for me. I'd rather get a tempura shrimp saimin before that.
