How was the Aunt Jemima brand even offensive in the first place?

>> No.19112285

>>19112211
It was like calling a brand of soy sauce "Chingchong's" and putting a picture of some random east Asian on the label. Not super offensive or harmful, but just kind of ignorant. In this case, I think the company was just looking for woke points while also covering their asses against the terminally online sjw crowd. No one asked them to change, they're just blindly following a trend they didn't actually understand.

Just don't come crying about under representation when y'all manage to remove all the ethnic faces on branding. Can't have it both ways.

>> No.19112472

>>19112444
No one is saying "ethnic" faces are bad?

It's when you slap a caricature or random face on a label that it becomes questionable. If aunt jemima was actually a real person known for her syrup it would've been fine. Instead, they picked a black sounding name and found a black model named Nancy to be the Mammy character for the label.

Who cares? Nobody throws a fit about random brands and stores being named something like "Bob" or "Grossman's" with generic balding gray haired white guy caricature for a logo.

How are you this dense?
Jemima was considered a problem because it was based on a racist caricature (Mammy). There never was an actual Aunt Jemima to make the syrup in the first place. The company just used a racist caricature to sell subpar syrup to poor people that think aunt Jemima was some wholesome black homemaker that made her own syrup.

Nancy green was one of the first black american women to represent a brand and her legacy is destroyed and dismissed as a racist caricature, that sounds pretty racist to me.

racism is a belief that people with different colored skin or from different countries are inferior.

there was not now or ever anything on any products like aunt jemima, land o lakes, or uncle ben that espoused that black people or indians were inferior.

if anything they engendered a feeling of hominess or wholesomeness, or mystical indian...ness

That's the funny thing, 0 actual racists considered it a racist symbol or anything and nobody in the country gave a shit until terminally online retards started blowing up about it, and them caving just gives racists ammunition to show how all of this supposed "racism" is a bunch of nothingburger garbage hyped up by people online for no reason. It helps legitimize that viewpoint more than anything else

When they updated Aunt Jemima from the original mammy version to some hip younger variant my grandpa said "What the they made Aunt Jemima sexy!"

>> No.19112704

Here's the thing- I get it, the character aunt Jemima could be taken as a reference to an old racist stereotype. But wouldn't it be a better idea to just change the character's presentation into something more flattering instead of do this retarded try hard woke shit? Like idk how about make aunt Jemima just look like a nice happy aunt that everyone loves. Or just present her in a way that just makes her look like a normal lady who happens to be black instead of a reference to the mammy stereotype? The way it is, it makes it look like you can't have a black person on a package without it being racist. Isn't the idea these days to increase positive representation of minorities so that they're portrayed in a positive light, as well, not stomp out any representation completely?

The picture of Aunt Jemima I grew up with didn't look offensive or in caricature at all. Looked like any normal Black woman I'd see circa 1980.

Don't really see how it's any different than the Newman's Own brand. I highly doubt this guy makes salsa, vodka sauce, ranch sauce, dog biscuits, or raisins.
