i recognize that place from "Occasional Discourse on the Negro Question" by
Thomas Carlyle. weird how you read about something and suddenly you encounter it in the real world. Never thought i would read about a slave revolt by demerara niggers and encounter it on a cooking forum, life is weird sometimes, i almost reconsider if there is a god when this happens.

anyway i cock my porridge 1 part oats 2 parts water 3 minute in the microwave. i usually add strawberry jam and some milk. i don't get why you want to make it some kind of dessert with all the berries and stuff they add.

i live alone and i hate having to cook for myself since i only got a small kitchen to work with so here's an oatmeal thingy i threw together. it only uses one bowl and one spoon. easy cleanup!

>add into a bowl the following
>250g of Quark
>250ml of milk
>75g of oats
>mix until blended well
>enjoy

~700kcal, 40g of good animal protein. once you get good at it it will only take you 15 minutes from start to finish, including making it and cleaning up afterwards.

>just take oatmeal and add *mountain of other shit to mask the taste of the oats*
Just water and salt is the simple and easy way. Can substitute the water for milk if you’d like. Sweet oatmeal is disgusting; if you want it to be more filling and nutritious add unsweetened peanut butter.

>he doesn't eat savoury oats
>not frying up some mushrooms, then dumping in your dry oats to saute, then cook in mushroom stock, and if you want, grate some parmesan cheese and lots of black pepper over it before serving
>not sauteing some onion and spinach, cooking your oatmeal with it, then mixing in feta cheese for a spanakopita-inspired oatmeal; you can add some sundried tomatoes as well if you want
>not cooking up sausage/bacon, toasting the oatmeal in the grease, then cooking it all together with stock, and right before it's cooked, add a handful of arugula and stir until wilted; alternatively save some crispy bacon to sprinkle on top after the oatmeal is cooked
>not just toasting your oatmeal in butter, then adding water/stock, then when it's cooked, add chopped green onions or chives, and serve with a fried egg on top
>not sauteing finely diced onions and jalapenos, adding in your dry oats, adding water, make sure it's slightly undersalted, then right before taking off the stove, add shredded cheddar cheese and mix until creamy for that cheese jalapeno popper feel
>not just taking whatever savoury combinations you enjoy and making it into oatmeal

I like oatmeal sometimes but I keep it simple, the KISS method.
A pinch of salt while cooking.
When done then a bit of honey or some jam, depends on what I have on hand.

great recipe except for this

what i do is blend my oats to flour, mix together wets and drys + add-ins as usual but without heat, then add 1/2 tsp baking powder and a little over half of a mashed banana. pour into an oven-safe dish and bake at 350 for 20ish min. basically becomes a muffin with the exact same ingredients as oatmeal, not counting leavening

>toast 50g of oats
Never thought to try this before. I assume it improves the flavor, but does it change the texture? Also are you talking about rolled oats or steel cut?
Here's my porridge
>1/4 cup whole buckwheat groats
>1/4 cup whole millet (I like Bob's Red Mill)
>1/4 cup Anita's Mill steel cut oats (I've had mold issues with other brands including Bob's. Anita's is just the best quality but hard to find)
>1/4 cup rolled oats (any brand)
>2 tbsp sunflower seeds
>1 tbsp sesame seeds
>1 tbsp ground flaxseed or 2 tbsp hulled hemp hearts (for Omega-3)
>3 tbsp mixed nuts (almonds, peanuts, cashews, hazelnuts, whatever you like)
>3 tbsp golden raisins (must be the golden kind, yes they're expensive, it's worth it)
>spices as desired (I like ground cinnamon, nutmeg, a tiny bit of ground clove, and a little splash of Mexican vanilla extract)
2x as much volume of water as dry ingredients, usually about 3 cups
Bring all ingredients to light boil, turn heat to simmer and put lid on. It's ready when it gets thick enough for your liking (I prefer mine quite dry). When it's finished but still hot I mash in a banana and sometimes add a few chocolate chips if I'm feeling naughty
