She's implying it can't be American because it has the word "Italian" in it, because some people can't wrap their heads around the fact that America is a nation of immigrants and that it's own original food reflects that, and that that fact doesn't take away from the food being American in origin.

To literal minded autists, the only thing that makes sense is "countries food = thousand years old recipe from the oldest natives born on that soil" which of course isn't true of any countries cuisine, pretty much most nations food involves shit that was brought there from somewhere else and then incorporated into the nations cooking, but we're talking about morons and their perceptions here.

I grew up in Texas so I really enjoy Texas BBQ and Tex-Mex. I prefer TX BBQ to other styles as other usually have a ton of sauce slathered over. Typically in Texas you have a small amount on the side - Rudy's has some of the best sauce despite being a chain. Best all arounder BBQ place that I've been to is either Southside Market near Elgin, or County Line near Bee Cave.

I moved to Northern Colorado on the front range in spring, I can't seem to figure out what the signature style of cuisine is here. Lots of places sell cheese curds, those are pretty good, but nothing here has me dying to have it again. It's kind of just generic midwestern, but nothing special. I even tried looking it up and it's technically salsa and palisade peaches - not really a meal.

The culture argument against the US is a red herring, and especially in the case of Europeans, just one big cope. Europeans, and other old world nations, cling to "culture" and "tradition" as ill-defined badges of honor because they secretly can't stand the fact that the US, a bold social experiment, has been so successful and become so powerful.

While we in the US do have localized culture and traditions across this vast nation, that is really not the point or the emphasis that we project internationally. As stated above, this country is a social experiment that thrives on being a mosaic of other cultures from other places, blending together. This has made us strong, and in fact, when it comes to food culture you can get most anything in the US that you can get anywhere else in the world at equal or greater quality because the passion for food was brought here from other places and shared. If you doubt or disbelieve this, it just shows your own ignorance and inexperience with the US. This is understandable, I suppose, since again, we are a vast nation filled with myriad wonders from around the globe and not even we natives could call ourselves experts of all that the US has to offer.

Some may take the easy route and just judge based on the little they know of food culture in the US. Massive numbers of cheap manufactured products and GMO crops. We take pride in this as well, because exported US foodstuffs and farming techniques have saved billions of lives from starvation. Food production is one the greatest strengths of the US.

Overall, the only response I can have, as an American, to the attitude of old world nation accusations of having no culture or traditions, is to point out that we have almost all of the cultures and traditions of the entire world, and some that are unique to us. This is, objectively, our strength.

I would also add to this thread the idea that "culture" and "tradition" being concepts that are based off of invention is a rather shallow and ultimately pointless exercise.

The vast majority of things that are "invented" enter the societal zeitgeist because they are logical and good things, even if at the time of their conception it may not seem that way. So your cultural cuisine is something that was "invented" by somebody that you claim some sort of national kinship to; but eventually it would have still been invented. Pizza would have been invented if romans or italians or whoever hadn't made it first. Pasta would have been invented if it weren't for asians... such is the same with all foods. So what really does "inventing" something mean, other than you claim the culture of somebody who documented it first? If that is the cornerstone of your "culture", than how meaningful is it really?

>> No.18987082

>>18987051
I might have been a bit harsh there in that some people like the general spices and ingredients in mexican food without really desiring the actual mexican food itself, in the same way that people can enjoy just tossing meat, rice and soy sauce together for a "Kind of asian" flavor rather than real chinese.

But in general, a good example of what a tex mex item is would be Taco bell: "kind of mexican", but clearly americanized and bastardized, quick and cheap.

>> No.18987109

>>18984624
This is objectively false, American pastries surpassed Euro ones a century ago. There's no other country on Earth that cares as much about food as America and has as many regional/national contests dedicated solely to grading the quality of pies and cakes. It's also why the BBQ is unmatched. Literally thousands of random restauranteurs and private chefs who do nothing all year but figure out better ways to smoke meats and bake pies on the off chance they win enough awards to become nationally relevant.

>>18984352
I agree that BBQ is by far America's #1 food product, but most of their top dishes are fusion foods. Tex-Mex, Chinese-American cuisine, and all the other stuff is substantial. Most of it ends up being served in their countries of origin because it's straight up better. Most often it's just better because they take food from poor countries and add actual ingredients and techniques to it to make it something worthwhile.

This whole argument around bbq really hits the nail on the head as to why euros think that there's no 'American Cuisine' - - because very little cuisine is unique you deconstruct it too much. You don't see me saying that chicken katsu isn't japanese cuisine because chicken schnitzel exists and they're pretty much the same thing

>> No.18991672

The thing is no one would disagree that chicken katsu is Japanese, but there wouldn't be an argument in the first place because no Japanese person would claim that they and they alone have developed the technology of frying chicken.

>Ever country on earth BBQs

the USA, (the Southern United States in particular) has the most sophisticated and pedigreed barbeque culture on the planet, bar none, and I am not a southerner. They take their BBQ as seriously as a Frenchman does wine or a German does scat porn, with distinct regional styles that come with their own strict standards of preparation.

>>18966113
lol what? I've been to various European countries all sporting their version of an 'American bar and grill'. American food as a whole has more of a regional identity than a nation-wide one though, which is usually shaped by the food traditionally available in the area as well as the diaspora that settled there.
