Longjing grown in the official designated region starts at around $800lb maybe a bit more, and goes up to eye wateringly high prices. The tea probably isn't worth it, ive had good longjing style teas that were 16¢ per gram or so. The main reason it's so expensive is that it is a very popular and prestigious gift that is valued highly in Chinese gifting culture where they consider the high price to be a positive thing to show how valuable their gift is. Unfortunately lots of the very high end of Chinese teas are subject to this gifting culture price inflation so the prices won't necessarily reflect their value as a tea drinking experience. There are also some teas like silver needle white tea where the grading and value is based totally on the appearance and size of the buds and the actual taste of the tea falls fairly low on the the list of qualities the tea is priced and judged for. That's why it's important to have a decent understanding of Chinese teas before you start throwing money around in the upper price categories of tea. As with most luxury commodities expensive doesn't always = better.

/tea/ I'm getting back into the kombucha game but don't want to deplete my pumi too quickly. Whats my best bet for a couple real cheap bulk buys? Those awazon white cakes so I can snag the 2013 xg tibet flame at $19/1.25kg too? I've still got a couple bricks of the 2018 left but I don't want to blow through that too quickly either.

Well the tibet flame is a solid deal, their shipping is cheap too, it will probably cost the same or less then your pre bat flu king tea mall order. The way their shipping is priced two separate orders probably wouldn't cost more then all the tea together so it might not hurt to get the xiaguan and then a cake of the white tea to make sure you want to buy a whle kilo of it.
Also not quite as cheap but one of those one kilo fuhai ripe bricks they have is probably a pretty good bet. The fuhai ripe from that era that i tried was really good.

>>18942876
I haven't tried nixing or chaozhou but i woild be willing to give either a shot. I typically see nice chaozhou coming in at around the $100 price point, my understating is that is pretty neutral flavor wise, not quite porcelain but similar to the red yixing its not as muting as some other clays. Nixing seems interesting but outside of mud and leaves and purple cloud im not as confident about sourcing it, and the info on how it effects tea is less clear. One of the wood fired nixing pots from mud and leaves would probably be fun. The wood fired Japanese pot i own really enhances sweetness and ive seen comments implying that it has a similar effect on other clays as well.

Just finished my 3rd gongfu session with YS Black Gold Bi Luo Chun from the sampler. It was quite nice. I liked the slightly sweet, roasted, or maybe caramelized flavors. It was a lot less astringent than western bagged black tea I've had. I also had the green and the raw puerh out of the sampler. I liked the green, but didn't care too much for the puerh. I've heard the puerhs in the YS sampler aren't that great, so I'm still gonna try some other ones.

While I am sure there is some good stuff, South Asian green teas have a reputation of typically being kind of mediocre. I think they don't have as much experience making green teas and they don't grow the optimal cultivars. Oolongs from that region tend to have more similarities to 1st flush Darjeeling or other lightly oxidized "black" teas than they do to most Chinese oolongs. I think South Asian oolongs are probably more compelling than their green teas. They do make some good white teas but they tend to be overpriced because they like to pretend white tea is an exotic luxury.

Are the weights in the pastebin per 100ml of water or per 100ml of combined volume? I put 6g of oolong in my 100ml gaiwan, and the leaved totally filled the gaiwan. It tasted great, but I don't want to be wasting tea

>> No.18952659

>>18952592
Per 100ml of water
Oolongs in particular tend to unfurl and fil your gaiwan, as long as you can still pour 50 ml or so of water in for each brew its fine. If things are so cramped that only a little splash of water fits in the gaiwan then use less leaf.
Also if you have a measuring cup handy measure your gaiwan to see the actual amout of liquid it holds when you fill it the amout you normally do for brewing. Gaiwan sizes can vary a bit from the listing, sometimes the list the capacity filled to the very brim, or they are just off slightly in general.

>> No.18952687

>>18952592
It truly does not matter, they're guidelines at best. Feel free to try with five, or five and a half grams of tea if you want, stick with whatever you prefer. I brew stronger than the pastebin guidelines, generally. Some people like weaker tea too, it all comes down to preference.

>It tasted great
Then what you did worked. The best way for you to make tea is the way that makes tea that is good to you. The ratios are really just guidelines to get you started on the right track.

To answer your question more directly, using combined volume is probably more common. I expect that the typical way to do things is to know approximately how much volume your gaiwan/teapot holds when filled up (to whatever level you normally fill it to) and then just use that as the fluid volume. I am confident most people (even those who weigh their tea on a scale) don't bother precisely measuring water volume. For example I know my gaiwan is approximately 100ml and I list that as my water volume regardless of how much tea leaf I am using. It is not as accurate to measure it this way but it does not matter much unless you just enjoy min-maxing your tea.

I've had three bombillas, my favorite is this triple filter one. I'm sure you can find it, it's the variant that's made in Argentina and has slits as the inside filter instead of holes. It filters dust much better than other models, the only downside is it can occasionally clog, but it doesn't happen super often and you can easily just open it and unclog with water.

If you want something that definitely won't clog but will let in a bit more dust, use one of those bombillas shaped like a flat spoon, these are tried and true.

In any case, remember to get one made from stainless steel (or alpaca / silver if you want to pay more for some reason). The stuff that doesn't specify stainless is usually nickel coated and won't last you long + not sure ingesting chipping nicket is good for you, especially since it's a common allergen.

Well a lot of the generic zongcha label teas in the early 2000s right at the cusp of privatization were in unauthorized productions from small factories or farmers. I think anyone could pay for the right to use the zongcha symbol but many didn't because it wasn't priced reasonably. These teas can vary greatly in quality but there are some gems.
The symbol in the middle of the cake in my pic is the zongcha logo

I know this will sound retarded, but can a tea make you suicidal? I bought some sleepy tea to improve my sleep but when I started drinking it I got these thoughts about suicide I don't normally have.
I know pretty dumb and unbelievable but I am not trolling.
The thoughts stopped once I stopped the tea.
I have done the experiment two times now, if I start drinking it the thoughts come back again.
Pic related is the tea in question.
Can the chamomile cause a depressive/suicidal reaction in my brain or something like that?

ripe / shou pu-erh is generally really thick if you brew it right and can also taste a little similar to coffee (earthy and roasty notes but with less bitterness and more sweetness usually). that's probably your best bet
just get a decent one from some well-known brand like Taetea or Haiwan to start with, random supermarket / asian store pu-erh can be pretty disgusting

Maybe, im really no an expert on adding milk to to tea, was the milk cold? If it changed the temperature by cooling the drink down a lot it might have made some astringent flavors more prominent. Also if it's some kind of non cow "milk" maybe that is causing the taste. If you want a milk alternative try oatmilk

Doing it with a gaiwan is called gong fu. With my current daily tea, I can probably get 4-5 infusions and still maintain flavor. After that its pointless. I'll be trying some liu bao from Kingteamall for the first time. this is the cheapish CNNP one from 2006
I've decided to boil it, because the last time I boiled liu bao it turned out really good. it's already on the stove.
will drink it with my mom and report back

update: the aroma has a bit of a beetroot / cellar note to it, but it's less present than in the 90s liu bao I tried. a bit more mild and woody
the liquor is mellow, nutty and a bit woody with a slight sweetness and a nice aftertaste of nuts. it didn't brew up super thick, but feels very smooth and rounded and has a bit of body to it. it doesn't have the creamy and really sweet flavor of some ripe pu-erh, but also none of the rough earthy or burnt notes.
all in all, not very complex stuff, but pleasant, especially at the cheap price. quite mild and approachable
even my mom liked it, she said it tasted a bit like cashews

Nice, ive also had good luck with boiling liubao. Especially for the ones with a good amount of stems in them it seems like a good way to get the most flavor out of it. Thr contrast between ripe puer and liubao is very interesting, they share some similarities but they are still quite distinct.
