What was your technique? Spices need oil to maximize the flavor extraction and distribution. If you were just sprinkling spice on the rice, it would take a lot to taste it, and the texture would become grainy from all the powder.

I just made a delicious pilaf by frying 1 shallot, 2 garlic cloves, 1 tsp cumin seeds, & 3 cardamom pods, then toasting 1 cup of washed rice in the oil, then adding 1 1/2 cup of water and steaming. Every grain was tasty because the flavor of the spices was infused in the oil, and there was enough oil to distribute it to all the rice. Also the spices were boiled in the water which was absorbed into the rice, which probably had an effect.
