As counterintuitive as it may seem, bottled bbq sauce is basically the polar opposite of bottled ketchup. There is absolutely no reason to make homemade ketchup. However good your end product may be, it's not going to be ketchup - or at least have the qualities that make people like ketchup, insofar as they do. On the other hand, there is no such thing as a good, shelf stable bbq sauce. Even the most mediocre homemade bbq sauce will be better than the best bottled sauce you can find on a grocery store shelf.
