Just got back from Taian in Osaka. Its a michelin 3 star restaurant, first one I've ever been to, so I thought it might be interesting to post about it here.

First course: a bunch of cold dishes. A spinach and oyster dish with a sweet sauce, some mushrooms in a broth, sea cucumber liver with cold yam (my favorite), some sort of fish organ, and 5 tiny potato chips.

3rd course is sashimi: its fish skin with a ponzu sauce and yellowtail with the standard soy sauce and wasabi combo. Ponzu sauce was really great, rest was pretty standard for nice sashimi.

I wish I got out of here for 300 dollars, but I brought my wife and ordered drink pairings.

The entree was whitefish and fugu. They were both good. Full of bones as one expects in asian countries. There was a salad too (not pictured) with radish and miso, and a bit of fried eel with pickled ginger (also not pictured).

After the entree, we had chawanmushi, which is a crab and egg custard. This was really one of the best dishes, I'd say mostly because of the high quality crab meat. Never had a dish like this before, it was more savory than sweet.

Then there was the rice. Its just normal rice I guess, but they gave us furikake, pickles, and fugu fin soup to make like a rice soup out of it. The broth was really savory and they offered me more rice after I finished so I suppose this is just to make sure you are full before you leave the restaurant.

Dessert was this fruit jelly and pear sauce dish. It had snow peas and red beans in it because japanese people like to eat those for dessert I guess. It had a pear brandy with it that helped out the flavor. Captcha ate my last post about this so apologies if Im being brief here.

Overall it was 63000 yen. Great meal but I dont think Id go back for that price. Maybe half of that would be fair, lol, but whatever, worth trying at least. I hope you all enjoyed my thread.

No offense at all as I have the same kind of experiences when eating at expensive restaurants in other countries too, but like what are you even looking for eating at a traditional kaiseki restaurant? You don't seem to appreciate a lot of the food being served anyway, you would have probably enjoyed some more casual yakiniku or ramen shop a lot more as a foreigner.
It's great that you're able to try shirako and other interesting ingredients but fundamentally this kind of place is almost entirely not suited for a western palate.
I say this not as disrespect but as a fellow foreigner who has lived here for 13 years now. When friends or family come, I just tell them to go to X good casual spot. Frankly, you're just wasting your money if you don't already really enjoy sashimi or delicately prepared kaiseki dishes, etc.

What gets me is if you go to an uber expensive French restaurant, or some crazy ritzy place in NYC or something, even taste aside, they will at least put effort into the plate presentation. There is an artistry in the plating and the presentation of the food to the eater, it's a large part of the experience itself.
