Just out of curiosity, does anyone enjoy a tea that is described as "earthy". When I've tried teas described as that, they literally taste like dirt. Just wondering if anyone truly likes brewed dirt as a flavor, or if it is just pretension to sell dirt as a scam.

I do say this as someone who likes black tea, but the ones I like certainly aren't "earthy". Though I have seen what I like called "robust" whatever the fuck that means.

Also curious how much /tea/ thinks tea descriptors are bullshit like wine descriptors are.

>> No.18568564

>>18568553
Earthy can mean either grassy, bitter/opposite of bright, dirt. For example when yerba is described as earthy, it means grassy.
I don't think I've had a tea that actually tasted like dirt. Coffee for sure. Maybe I haven't tasted actual dirt recently enough to compare to.

>> No.18568591

A decent portion of the teas i drink taste like earth/soil/wood usually old fermented teas, I usually enjoy them. That said they are usually complex and have more going on thatn just that, sweetness, dried fruit flavors, chocolate flavors stuff around those lines.
My girlfriend always complains that im making her try/smell teas that taste like dirt.
Anyway flavor descriptors are real but also exaggerated.

>When I've tried teas described as that, they literally taste like dirt. Just wondering if anyone truly likes brewed dirt as a flavor,
Yes "earthy" teas like shou or liu bao taste like dirt and yes people actually like them.

>Also curious how much /tea/ thinks tea descriptors are bullshit like wine descriptors are.
There are a lot of really common tea descriptors are fairly accurate and relatively consistently used. Though admittedly with the "tastes like ..." style of descriptors you often have to do the taste bud equivalent of squinting a bit to get things to line up. Sometimes you do see to descriptions stretching things too far, especially when they try to add to many descriptors. That said nature of the sense of taste makes it hard to be truly objective and of course there is no accounting for the other sense of "taste" which can bias descriptions. It is always better to take tasting notes with a grain of salt, at least until you have decided whether you generally agree with the person writing them.

Electric kettle really is the way to go.
Next is to boil water in a different room, then pour it in a big insulated bottle and bring that to wherever you want to make tea. You can get bit stainless steel vacuum insulated bottles pretty cheap these days.
You can get single electric or induction burners that you can plug in and use almost anywhere.
Beyond that you end up with options that are questionably safe. Single burner stoves that use gas, those tins of flammable gell, charcoal water boilers which are not safe to use in small confined spaces.

A bit more expensive then ordering from china but you are paying for the convenience of it shipping from amazons warehouse.

If you mean the moonlight white cake, that was me. This COFCO/Butterfly one is good too:
https://www.fullchea-tea.com/-p0685.html
It's been a fairly long while since I've had it or written about it, but here are some notes from my mildly autistic journal:
>Dry leaf smells of deep mellow fruits and perhaps chocolate, with a subtle floral character. Brewed leaf smells more deeply of a lightly roasted milk chocolate, still with some of that fruit aroma overhead (which seems lighter somehow). Thickness low, astringency medium, bitterness low. The flavor balances on an indulgent roasted milk chocolate note, which then goes floral, and balances between the two until settling on a very slightly bitter herbal finish. There is some light creamy texture present, even on a short rinse.
I do remember that it becomes more floral-dominant with each infusion, if that matters to you. I can take a picture of the cake/leaves and infusion later today if you'd like to get a better look at it.

Another simple rec (this time for shou pu'er) would be a Haiwan 9978 cake. I had one from 2018, and it had mostly low brown syrup and sugar notes. Pretty simple and standard flavor, but pleasant. You can get different years on the site, but this is the one I had:

I guess my concern is you drop $30 for a quality cake and then even if it was only 8c/g you're still out $30 if the cake isn't to your taste.

It helps to post in the thread if you want some feedback. If it isn't something decently-known, or a brand you have experience with, then it's a greater gamble...but that doesn't mean it is a bad option either. Frankly, I'd usually prefer a full cake or tuo over a "sample" just because sample costs are usually high anyway. It can also sometimes take some time to properly appreciate a new cake, and figure out how best to make it. I view samples as options for when you don't have any intention of paying fully for a notably expensive product, but still want to experience it.

I'm almost done with them, so I can start drinking more of my better tea again. The idea is to drink my way to a better overall stash quality. I just don't like to waste so-so, but otherwise perfectly serviceable material.

However, at the same time, we have limited lifespans, and thus a limited number of tea sessions to experience. We should aim to have many different experiences within tea. So, I am not into the idea of "daily driver" tea, but rather a modest inventory of different ones to pick from. For example, I'd rather have 3x357g cakes than 1x1.1kg or 1.2kg chunk of the same thing every time.

We had a discussion a few days about how hot tea and alcohol wouldn't really mix well, but there are plenty of people who don't mind cold brew tea. I have to wonder, maybe an oolong would pair well with a botanical alcohol like Gin or Triple Sec? I know Suntory actually makes a Roku gin with Sencha and Gyokuro green tea and it's pretty fucking nice (I have a bottle) so I feel like cold-brewed green tea and gin might be a nice combo. Here is a off the cuff list from white2tea. I won't claim to have tried all these teas personally but I would be willing to trust that they are good. This list is more mid priced and higher quality than budget so feel free to ignore this list if it does not meet your needs. If you need something cheaper Yunnan sourcing may be a better option as they have a better selection of cheap teas. They also have a much better selection of aged tea. Cutting variety and buying less teas in greater quantity would also save you more. You did not specify what kind of tea cakes you want so I included a bit of everything.

I like drinking black tea (turkish) in breakfasts. The method of preparing is different to the other methods listed in the pastebin, since it requires quite alot of heat to get the full flavor:
1-put water on medium heat on teabottom
2-put your tea ontop of the water on the teatop
3-let the water steam cook the tea from the bottom of the teatop
4-this should mellow the taste of the bitter tea and preheat it so it doesn't react violently with the hot water
5-wait atleast 10 min
6-pour water slowly with biggest distance to the tea in the teatop
7-turn down the heat to lowest possible
8-wait another 10 min
The ideal tea will be something we call "rabbit's blood". And with the turkish lira in the shitter black tea is cheap as fuck right now

I think tian jian and liu bao are.the best for grampa style, also any roasted oolong, ripe puer is usually good but it somethimes needs to be rinsed first. Also any Chinese black tea that isn't too malty, especially the ones from wuyi that are processed kinda like oolong

I've recently taken to hei cha or shu in place of the shengs, blacks and greens I used to drink. I found the former to be much easier on the stomach, much more forgiving to brew, and to exhibit a range of flavours that are new to me.

However, I noticed that even in mid-price range hei chas, the leaf quality is quite poor, with plenty of twigs and torn/ chopped up leaves. I suppose this means that with many hei cha you're paying moreso for the specific process or "recipe" of tea fermentation, rather than the leaf, and the "story," and the leaves are most likely sourced from company- or state-owned plantations. Western-facing vendors at least attempt to make some of their wares seem organic, ecological, pesticide-free, or whatever buzzwords whitoids care about.

Given that I am probably consuming plantation tea not marketed towards westerners, how many pesticides am I imbibing by drinking hei cha over blacks, shengs, etc.?

>Given that I am probably consuming plantation tea not marketed towards westerners, how many pesticides am I imbibing by drinking hei cha over blacks, shengs, etc.?
Hei cha definitely has rougher processing and has litte to no focus on leaf appearance. You can still get fu bricks and some other hei cha made out of forest teas if you are willing to put some effort (and money) into sorucing but yeah the chepaer stuff is rough and ready.
That said i don't think hei cha is farmed as intensely. They don't care about leaf appearance so pesticide use in nowhere near as important as it is with some super large bud grade silver needler or other premium teas where there is a large foucs on appearance. They also don't care about yeild as much since a lot of this tea is coming from old half abandoned farming projects. So even though the tea is visually ugly and rhe older larger leaves will have more bioaccumulation of whatever is in the soil i think hei cha is relatively clean. Probably very low pesticide use, herbicides, im not sure. In theory any of these teas that go through the large state sanctioned factories are undergoing much more stringent testing then some tea a farmer is selling directly to some western vendor since at least in theory there is a lot of pressure on the Chinese government to keep food quality standards after the recent food scandals and the more demanding Chinese middle class.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Or again just buy forest teas. Yunnan sourcing has lots of hei chas that are from untented semi wild gardens.

I know it is used in some savory dishes, and I believe also as a flavorant/aroma component for rice. Besides the ice cream anons have mentioned, you can use green tea powder (or culinary ""matcha"") and mix it into a lot of things alongside stevia or sugar for a nice flavor. I used to blend half a bag or more of spinach with almond milk, stevia, cinnamon/clove, and green tea powder. The stevia helps cut down the bitterness, and the spinach has a fairly neutral profile, so it just adds to the thickness/creamy texture and color. You can add some protein/collagen powder (with or without flavors) if you want to mix it up, since all those flavors are neutral enough to be 'absorbed' by anything else you add.

YS 2021 qian jia shan, 357g, 76$ (0.21 $/g)
6.1g tea - ~100ml, rinse 5 s
1st brew 25s 98c
faint smell, somewhat nice, and what you could epect from a young sheng
low no astringency or bitterness, and also no real taste which could just come from it being the first brew.
2nd brew, 35s, slightly darker soup, very slight astringency, very slight "rocky" taste
mouthfeel is fine, slightly thicker than water, not drying but not really oily either
3rd brew, 1m went for broke to force some taste out of it, slightly darker brew again, i tried to colourbalance the images but im not sure i did a very good job
at this point there is a very slight astringency still, as in noticeable

This tea does not taste bad at all. The problem is it does not taste much at all. It has tiny amounts of everything i am looking for in a good puerh, or things that make it interesting, some minerality, mouthfeel, slight astringency, but its like this is just an outline of a tea, like the actual content has been removed and just the husk remains, with hints of what it once was.
Extremely boring and uninteresting as a drinking experience, and to a point where it actually annoys me a bit since the description on YS says the tea has "a very strong taste and aroma", which i cannot find.

The cake could have dried out BUT 1. the cake has only been in my possession for like 1.5-2 months at this point. 2 none of the other teas i have stored the same way this has been has experienced the same muting of taste in that amount of time, and 3. two other cakes of puerh from the same order/shipment still have their strong tastes, so its not an issue with the shipment taking long either. I have also done 3 "sessions" with this tea over the past week to try to get more out of it, also with other teas in between, which i can still taste, so i can not say the lack of taste comes from me being sick.

Two conclusions i can draw, either this specific cake is a dud or the tea does not taste much. not recommended from me

He copied the description from previous years of the same tea so maybe it was a bad batch. Generally i think 2021 was a pretty decent year for puer but that doesn't mean the famer can't scew up the processing.
From my very amateur opinion it looks like the processing on your batch was overly green, not enough oxidation and it was fried too much during processing. It probably had some punch last year when the tea was a few months old and then quickly died since it looks to me like the farmer basically made it into green tea.

Been enjoying this lil Japanese pot, its good for smaller sessions.
Very different from my yixing. The Japanese pot has very little muting, maybe it rounds out bitterness a tiny bit but thats it, it also noticeably increases the sweetness of teas. My yixing is somewhat muting and adds a minerality to teas. Its interesting how they each work great for some teas and awful for others.
So far im liking this Japanese pot for young raws, old fairly clean raws clean hei cha and roasted oolong. Tried it with an hk raw and it really enchanced and excentiated the storage taste, not very enjoyable.

Its hard for me to say much more without knowing the manufacturer, its clearly labeled as an old tree tea from yiwu which is a famous area fornpuer production but the Chinese often take a bit of poetic license when labeling these kinds of teas. Break a 5 gram chunk off of the cake using a buttknife or a screwdriver or something. Put the chunk of tea in a mug, fill the mug with boiling water. Once the tea is cool enough to drink drink it. If it smells fishy or doesn't taste good you can rinse it first. That's a nice tea, and it's hard to go wrong with YS's whites. Among cakes, the 100g shou mei and gong mei (the latter might be sold out) are great, not quite the deals they used to be but still good bang for your buck. The "Meng Song Village" cake is also quite nice, as are their Moonlight White options. In general their compressed whites are better than their loose, but if you don't mind spending more per gram for a novel experience, get a sample of their "Sweet Ya Bao" (maybe also out of stock?), it's a bizarre flavor profile.
There are probably young sheng offerings on YS that would appeal to you on a similar level but nothing springs to mind.

Raw, whole milk, cream on top if its an option
If you can't get raw than 2% lactose free "milk"

raw milk is inconvenient to get, it's illegal to sell raw milk in the store, i would have to walk a bit longer and talk with a farmer to get it.

Milk only comes in 0.5%, 1.5%, and 3% here. i don't know why anyone would buy lactose free milk unless they are a genetically inferior subhuman.

But there is no point in drinking a bunch of lactose in pasteurized milk
Anyway make sure you have a hearty malty tea, assam, english breakfast, irish breakfast something like that, you need a tea that can stand up to the milk and maintain its flavor

German silver historically contained 2-3% lead, i would avoid alpaca silver/german silver completely unless you test it with one of those 3m lead test sticks.

For the gourd gourds these guys have reasonable prices and a good selection of yerba mate too

I dont love their selection of bombilla, might be good to get a two or three pack of cheap stainless spoon style ones off of amazon or ebay.

Starting out if you want something safe and accessible cruz de malta or la merced de campo. If you want something strong and a little smoke rosemonte extra. If you want something organic than anna park for something on the stonger side, or porongo on the more mild side.
