it’s almost $5/ lb at my local supermarket. it’s more expensive per pound than organic ground pork. it’s way more expensive than pork chops. why eat highly processed industrial meat when real meat is cheaper

DESU Spam isn't highly processed. It's just bits of ham and pork in potato starch, compressed and canned into shape. It's fundamentally the same as scrapple except thickened with starch and not gelatin.

Wasn't it originally invented as a way to preserve meat to get it to GIs in ww2 or something?
Regular meat makes sense in a normal setting, but I can see how the logistics and expense of fresh meat wouldn't be high on a military's priority list.

It isn't really meant as an everyday replacement for "real" meat. It's more of a convenience food because it's shelf stable and quick to prepare. It's also a bit of a treat, if not a delicacy, if you grew up eating it and like the distinct salty flavor. Pic related is some spam and eggs with rice I had earlier.

That's like saying that buffalo wings were invented as a way to sell the shit parts of the bird. It's technically true, except that nobody considers pork shoulder or chicken wings "shit quality cuts" anymore.

I am a supervisor at Food Lion and we just tossed like 14 of these. We were supposed to toss 15 but there was a discrepancy. Among other things.

Fucking wasteful as fuck but nothing we could do. Dumped about 2 carts of canned good into a locked dumpster. If the comp tells us something has to go, it has to go.
