My dad went to college in Tennessee in the 70s and he said this literally did happen to him at every restaurant. He always drinks Coke, so that's what he'd order and up north he'd just get a Coke, but in Tennessee they always asked him "Which kind?" He started saying "Coke or Pepsi" instead and that got the point across that he was trying to order cola so they never asked for clarification any more. It's not something that happens any more, but it definitely used to happen a long time ago.

"pop" is just old-timey sounding, i think most pop-sayers would be old farts that grew up in an era before the soda became the standardized term. soda is basically the default term used in all media, unless the regionality of a setting is being emphasized by the use of terms like pop, so a kid consuming media would be influenced by that.

What are some equally cheap alternatives to diet cokes?

I admit I have an addiction and drink over 2 liters a day, I know its bad but there's not really an equivalent to it.
I like snapples, but its the same price for a small 6 pack bottle as a 24 box of cans of diet coke, and that's not looking at the 2 liter bottles.

Same with most equivalents, its just easily 3x the price of coke is.
I want to drink healthier but I just don't know what to fill the void of diet cokes since that's also my main fix of sweetness.
