We do, I can go down the road and get all kinds of fish from the specialist fishmonger. I get a lobster once in a while, since it's pretty expensive, but I usually go for prawns or scallops

Even supermarkets have pretty good selections these days

We do. Though in ye olden times without refrigeration people weren't going to be buying fish in the midlands so thats why a lot of classic British recipes are of livestock. Cultures with a big emphasis on fish recipes like Scandinavia or Japan pretty much all lived on the coast where Britain has lots of inland population for much of its history since the island is relatively flat unlike Japan.

I don’t get it. In Britain the fish and chips is some chips and a greasy slab of who the fuck knows what. Even the most basic povvo takeaway in Australia has crab claws, calamari rings, spring rolls, and seafood salad.

The shitty fish and chip shop near me got bought out by some greeks recently and they revamped it as a combination fish and chips + greek cuisine takeaway. I was a bit apprehensive at first but they do the anglo food perfectly, 10/10 fish and chips plus other things like crumbed sausage, spring rolls, etc., so I started trying the greek stuff and that's great too. It's nice to have variety on the menu.

That said, it's not hard to beat the previous owner. Some old chink who didn't speak english and seemingly never cleaned the place or changed the oil.

Fish and chips, national dish mate. Weak bait, enjoy the bump.

>> No.18077660

We don't tend to eat the more exotic seafood in this country. It still tends to be mild white fleshed fish like haddock and cod that responds well to being battered and fried. We don't tend to like looking at whole fish (head, fins etc.) People living near the coast tend to be an exception.

Personally, I love all seafood but then again I'm of Mediterranean heritage. The problem for me is that it costs a bomb to buy our good quality domestic seafood. For the most part it's the farmed seafood that I can afford and doesn't really taste of much. People choose the best value and convenient food. In most cases that's going to be something like pork for £5 per/kg rather than prawns etc. for £10+ per/kg.
