America factory farming methods dictate that all eggs must be washed before sale to remove dirt and bacteria. Ironically this causes the thin protein membrane of the shell itself to be washed away, allowing more porous surface of the egg to be exposed and increasing the chances of the egg hairline fracturing/puncturing and becoming a carrier for salmonella or e.coli bacteria. Not at all. You can catch salmonella from the factory farm eggs more than local backyard hens. In factory farms they bleach the eggs to clean them which strips off a seal that keeps bacteria out. I know a friend who raises chickens and ducks and their eggs can be left on a counter far longer than store bought because they still have the protective layer. The only downside is you can't wash the eggs until right before you use them or you'll wash it off.
