I go to a breakfast place one day a week. I drink some coffee and read the news, its great. But I don't think I would generally go to a normal restaurant unless I was stuck somewhere alone and needed to blow some time. Even then I would hit more of a bar.

I thought it was the most embarrassing shit until college when I would have an hour between classes to kill. Sitting by yourself with no distractions (I still had a flip phone back then) was really nice when you were stressed to the brim the other 23 hours of the day

Quick breakfast and coffee in a diner? Sure, without a second thought. Lunch? I'd rather just skip lunch. Dinner? I'd rather not. I'd rather just get it to-go. That's not to say I wouldn't, but I'd have to go early to make sure I scored a prime seat at the bar. And it'd have to be in a major city or town I don't really know anyone in. Then I'd proceed to quickly order a cocktail, drink it fast, and eat fast when the food came.

Diners are easy places to "over" tip and the staff will love you. Leave a $5 tip on a $5-10 single guy breakfast and coffee order and she'll think you're a God

Yeah but only for lunch nowadays. I stopped going in the evening because there's only groups around and it got awkward fast. Most restaurants here don't have "single person" tables either, so the staff would hate my guts for taking one of their 2-person tables. (Note: I'm only talking about restaurants and not stuff like McDonalds)
Then again I live in a very extroverted city/country where people don't even go to the toilets alone, social rejects like me are a rarity. I hear japan has some ramen stores specifically for people to eat alone, that sounded nice.
