I know the OP's cognac, but I have a general hard liquor question, hope that's ok.
I've always had an issue with drinking hard liquor cause I'm a wuss so I usually stick to red wine, but I was making this drink that's apple cider and Fireball whisky and when I run out of cider I end up just finishing off the Fireball straight (and same type of thing with Jager, Triple Sec, etc).
Now I was thinking I should just get into drinking actual whisky (or brandy, whatever) to avoid all that sugar, so does anyone have a recommendation for an easy kind to get into for a beginner and a wuss like me?

Regardless, I'll probably just browse the brandy aisle at the liquor store for a random affordable bottle next time I'm there (the idea of a random whisky still makes me feel squeamish).

It's still a wine-based brandy but made with a slightly different process.
Because it is made by smaller producers, and to more traditional methods, it tends to be a better quality than the big house cognacs, and for a relatively cheaper price.

Of the lafite cognac? Are you in europe? I've had some other expensive cognacs and I find there's generally two styles. One is so old and smooth it almost tastes like really nice juice with the rancio and all that. The other kind still has some alcohol burn and power to it. The alcohol is very well integrated, but it still has a burn. My guess is the lafite will be the former, but I'm hoping it has some power to it. Think I'm going to pop the bottle in june along with some excellent cigars. Maybe I'll make a thread about it.

Hey anon, I think I've gotten that Calvados recommendation from you before, maybe even in one of these fine Hennessey threads. Unfortunately the Camut stuff seems hard to get a hold of unless you're in Cali or Europe. I have not tried the other two. Very curious what Cognac that's aged 50-75 years is like, have you had them? One of the reviews for Tesseron 29 on cognac-expert said something to the effect of it almost reverting back to wine at that point.

I didn't want to open the Groult 18, so this ended up being the first Calvados I tried! I'm sure it's far from the best, but not bad at all for $30. I keep pouring more...

Probably. I love shilling camut. They make a balsamic from cider as well that is incredible. It's syrupy, sweet and amazingly delicious.

If it's legal to have booze shipped to your state check out klwines.com they have a couple of the higher end bottles. 400 and 750.. Probably best to try their younger offerings and more calvados first, but they're both worth the price imo.

I have a bottle of both the tesseron 29 and the delamaine. The tesseron is so old that it is basically as smooth as wine. Loads of rancio character, complexity and just remarkably smooth. Smoother than any other spirits Ive had before. The delamaine has more alcohol burn to it, but it's very well integrated and some would prefer the punchier, more lively style over the 29. Both amazing and you won't be dissapointed.

I find that brandies don't suffer from diminishing returns on price as badly as whisky does. Armagnac is definitely better value, but a truly good 500+ bottle of cognac will not dissapoint.

Sounds awesome. Never heard of it before so I looked it up.

>“They (the Domaine Pasquet team) help us in our mission to find very old cognac exclusively for Australia, to bottle it in its raw form and save it from going to one of the big brand blenders who would blend this with younger cognac, filter it, add wood flavouring and sugars and water it down to 40%,” he tells us.
That's painful but describes the majority of Cognacs out there probably. The Cognac frogs should take a page from whisk(e)y and do a lot more cask-strength, non-filtered bottlings.

>>17895948
Thanks for the description! Sounds lovely, but too rich for my blood. Most I'd splurge on anytime soon is probably the Tesseron 53. As far as klwines, I ordered from them many years ago but they've since changed their policy and no longer ship to AZ. It's a shame because they carry some otherwise hard to find stuff. I did look up the Rarete on there:
>This Rareté is made from Calvados lots that are, at minimum, 50 years old, and it contains Calvados up to 100 years old. Only six bottles are imported to the United States each year, making this an extremely rare and special treat for the Calvados enthusiast.

Damn son! Enjoy

That's a bummer about kl. They have loads of good stuff. They're a distributer as well, so they can do their own bottlings and import. They do a good bit of really great value direct import armagnac and scotch. :(

The rarete is unbelievable. It's a kaleidoscope of apple flavors. From ripe apple to the best baked apple pie you've ever had, fall spices, beautiful wood flavor and texture. Perfectly smooth. It's all in there and each sip's flavor evolves for a long time. My all time favorite spirit hands down.

My theory with what makes calvados special is that we are all familiar with apple flavors from our childhoods and onwards, so the more familiar flavors are much more relatable than other spirits.
