>go to japanese restaurant
>small unassuming building
>the booths all have arches and the benches are slightly inset to the walls, giving a ton of privacy
>right away the server brings a steamed towel to wipe your hands on
>the water comes with a slice of lemon
>absolutely beautiful handmade ceramic dishware
God what a pleasant experience. Leagues above any other restaurant I've ever been to.

I hate Japanese food. And this is coming from a guy who grew up eating that shit near daily. It has basically all the same issues everyone says they have with British food (bland, also bland, quite bland... did I mention bland?) but unlike UK cuisine, Japanese cuisine has a much better make-up kit as well as an image consultant and really good publicist. The result is very pretty, beautiful, gorgeously bland food.

Used to be a Korean resto near me that had little rooms. You left your shoes outside the room, went in and sat down on the floor with were served all traditional-like. Was nice. Burned down. Rather than reopen, the space for it (and several of its neighbours) was sold and they together became an H-mart.

I too grew up with Japanese food outside of Japan and think you're wrong about it being bad, or maybe my father was just a great cook (he is, though his stuff was classic Jap "fusion" that would sound bad until you tried it). What type of cuisine do you think is the best btw?

>that pic
I remember during the lockdowns being alone and playing MGS: Phantom Pain on my birthday, when suddenly I was whisked away by the Peaquad back to base where everyone threw me (snake obviously) a surprise birthday party and Kojima wished me a happy birthday. I don't know if he'll ever read this, but thanks Hideo that really made my birthday that day.

Understandable for Americans. It's a giant fucking country, Canada is basically the same so there's no point going, and everywhere else worthwhile and not dangerous/tourist-kidnappy requires flying across the ocean which is pretty expensive.

Normally I'd agree, but some Jap restaurants like the one OP desribed are really nice. I haven't found an American, Italian, Mexican, etc. restaurant willing to give people so much privacy without booking an event room.

i don't know what you're talking about. I've been to japan and lived there for 2 years (military) and every time i ate at a place it was genuinely some of the best diner/fast-food restaurants i've been too.

>gyudon (sukiya)
>ramen (volcano ramen, any of the other 100 ramen joints)
>sushi (its better and cheaper there)
>jbbq
>shabu shabu
>lawsons fried chicken
>the beers (orion)
and even if you hate all the shit i listed its still a first world country so you can just eat american food if you want they will make it japanese in some fashion.

I am very curious what authentic sushi is like. Everywhere that sells sushi I've ever been to more or less every roll has avavado or cream cheese or both.

Closest thing to a Japanese restaurant in my flyover town is an all you can eat sushi buffet for $17.99. it's staffed by Mexicans and they play modern pop country over the pa system. I like it, but I've never had sushi anywhere else.
