I'm not spending a lot of money on rum because it's going to be going into mixed drinks.

The stupid Embargo is probably a reason for the hype in the USA. In the rest of the world it's just regular rum (definitely not in the top 5) but impossible to beat for the price. It's great for Daiquiris or just rum and coke.

Out of all the mass-marketed brands, maybe. Good rum is insanely cheap, you buy it from poor countries like Puerto Rico and they tend to be much better than havana. All the old hat cuban rum makers fled to adjacent central american shit-holes after the revolution (and america, but good american rum is a myth)

I'm interested in what you consider to be good rum worth spending 5x the price of havana

>>Jamaicans cannot add things to their rum

This is pretty much true though. Even trusted distillers who by all means make good rum and up doing this. It's legal, it sells more rum, therefore it's a safe assumption that anything you buy that isnt jamaican probably contains additives. Sugar tests only work for sugar, they dont account for the likes of extracts. It doesn't mean they're bad drinks, you should just understand that what you're buying, with rare exception, isnt purely a spirit.
