I'm a USian with relatives in England. English cooking is absolute trash, literally worse than the airline food last time I went. This isn't an issue anywhere else in Europe. Mainland Europe can cook. Scotland and FUCKING WALES can cook. But everything I ate in England was the seemingly impossible: nauseatingly bland.

England has suffered from immigration where the national foods have been ousted in favour of foreign muck. So you'll be hard pressed to find great English food apart from fish and chips and cooked breakfasts unless visiting places that specialise in it. You can go to a pub and get a decent meal but then its hit and miss often times and also perhaps down to personal taste. If you've never had a dish before you're probably unlikely to accept a subpar one.

What you want is to stay with an English family that cooks English food. But I suppose that's the same with any country.

Honestly pub grub is fairly bad, but traditional British game dishes are very good, as is a lot of modern British cuisine, which has borrowed very successfully from Scandinavian modernism and Italian modernism - a sort of pan European fusion with added spice.

Though possibly lacking in spices, us Brits do have a few classics and do comfort food pretty well.

British cuisine can form part of a full and varied diet. Don't get me wrong, like 90% of the time I eat dishes from other regions. But sometimes there's an itch that only a good ole Sunday roast can scratch.
