Been trying out a couple coffee store chains in the bay area, mostly focusing on espresso. I kept my expectations low, so I ended up pleasantly surprised overall.
>Peet's: subpar, out of 3 locations 1 had people that knew what the hell they were doing
>Joe & the Juice: decent for what it was, good enough for a quick breakfast, seemed more consistent across locations
>Blue Bottle: the only chain where I was offered a selection of roasts, even though it was "blend" versus "single estate" (not further specified). It's okay but the roasts weren't quite my taste.

Trying out a new coffee this morning! It's a Yirgacheffe, which I've never roasted before. This one is much nicer than any yirgacheffes I've ever tried from local roasters in the past.
Dry smell: indistinguishable florals
Wet smell: Wow–jasmine blossoms and sugar cane!
Taste: Holy shit this one is sweet. Maybe the sweetest coffee I've ever had. Tastes exactly like light brown rock candy sugar crystals, just a hint of vanilla and a lovely little lemony acidity at the end and in the aftertaste. So sweet, so smooth. The green has some defect beans. I picked out about 10 mutants in a half pound batch. Very nice coffee. Glad I got some.

M'current bag I'm working through was roasted back in 9/2. Absolutely no fucking aroma, not from the beans, not from when I grind it, and not even in the brewed bag. Supposedly Colombian arabica.
I've got a different bag, that came with my with the grinder I just ordered, it has nothing written on it yet and yet even unopened it has good strong smells.

No, but you would need to either see it bagged at the roastery or have some insight into when it was done. Or just not care about age like 99% of coffee drinkers. Buying local from small roasters is usually a good bet since they can move their entire stock within 2 months and have new ready to go.

Yeah it is a small local roaster. Whenever I come they offer free tastings too. Maybe it's just a bad batch? It was that month's discount at half price.

Yeah, sometimes the beans can be bad to start with or get over/under roasted. This sounds like a case of "help me move this quickly expiring stock" if he was doing half off. To complicate shit further, theres also the chinese company Helor, who Australian Helor was having do their manufacturing. Due to lax chinese IP laws, they are still in business with the name and say Helor Aus and Option O(now the same company) are fucking them. This is why the Helor Stance Motor(that option o designed off the helor stance manual) now just called the OOHSM.

>Helor's official website: helor.com, the one and the only.
Helor used to collaborate with an Australian distributor (the websites they used: helor-coffee.com and option-o.com) to promote our brand, and has now ceased cooperation.
Helor's products are designed and producted by the Chinese team during the whole period, the Australian team was only involved in brand promotion.

Define expensive. We rec hand grinders for one reason. A $200 hand grinder is going to "punch above" its weight compared to a $200 electric because more money can go into the alignment/adjustability and burrs when you're not paying for a motor. Machine time isn't cheap so by just mounting shit in plastic you're cutting out a significant amount of manufacturing time. P100 is ~$2800 shipped. Those burrs are ~$550 if you buy them from ssp.

Wet smell: All of the above, but stronger
Taste: Gentle cinnamon/clove mulled spice flavors very well integrated in a sweet dark honey middle tone. Definitely oranges, but it's not overwhelmingly citrusey. All the honey, spices, and citrus balance out with nothing so much on the top. Black tea is a very subtle undertone. Aftertaste isn't so much citrus, but more spice, a tingling cinnamon.

Nice coffee. Good daily drinker for medium roasts. I've had similar Kenyas that also shifted more towards spice than citrus. Beans are very uniform, almost Kenya level grading. Good job, Rwanda!

Great to hear! If you're struggling with preheating this is the new tech. People are doing shit like this or buying silicone funnels to hold the brew chamber in the kettle and let it heat soak.

depends a bit on the coffee, dark roasts are usually brewed at a bit lower temp than light. 80c is probably as low as people generally go I think. if you really want if you're lacking heat you can try boiling the water fully on the stove for a brew to compare with

I just google highly rated roasters in my state (Oregon so I've got a bunch and I haven't run out of places to try even just within the Portland area). As for type of beans, I've just been trying randomly and seeing the difference between blends, single origin etc. There's a roaster pretty close to me and I've tried a lot of their beans out of convenience.

Recently been grabbing more blends since I just got an espresso machine after doing only pour-overs and being unsatisfied with the body of my drinks. Still figuring out what beans I like as espresso though. Are single origin beans acceptable to use?

>> No.17520536

>>17520331
>Are single origin beans acceptable to use?
yes. i think you should start with single origin beans so you can know what that bean from that country from that region tastes like. and then if you find a blend you want to try you can see what is in the blend (dont buy unless they give detailed info on exactly what beans are in the blend) and know if you like it or not.

like if a blend has 50% from x region in colombia and 50% from x region in brazil and you generally dont like colombian coffee you can know that there is a good chance you won't like the blend, but if you only drink blends and you dont like the blend you have no idea why you dont like it.

buying small amounts of many different single origins is the best way to go so you can have a general understanding of most kinds of coffee.

im thinking of buying one, im autistic and automatic grinders make a sound that causes me alot of discomfort so if i want to grind i have to use manual grinders and im not going to be caught dead with one of those dogshit tiny ass meme manual grinders. i dont drink espresso but if i did i would buy a manual espresso maker for the same sound reasons, cafes and coffee shops are literal hell for my brain and send me into a schizo episode just from the sound of the machines alone.

>I wish it wasn't designed for espresso,
this is my one major gripe about the coffee industry is that most products (especially grinders) are geared super heavy to espresso. like sure this grinder can 100% be adjusted for almost any kind of coffee you want to make but every single video showing it off only shows how to grind for espresso and how to make espresso with it, and every forum post talks about dialing in for espresso, like holy fuck can everyone stop deepthroating espresso so goddamn much give some head to the other brewing methods.

its like 70% espresso 20% v60 pour over and then 10% everything else.
