Those tongue maps aren't actually accurate at all. The idea that we taste certain flavors with certain areas of our tongue is a myth.

Spiciness is just your pain receptors getting triggered. It's why you can "taste" spiciness with your anus when you poo it out.

I would choose to keep my common sense so I had the common sense to kill myself after losing all my other senses

>> No.17442919

The whole x senses concept is still wrong and can't be fixed by just adding another senese because it's such a gross oversimplification. There is no such thing as a salty taste, there are no "salt receptors", we can probably sense chloride and sodium ions independently (explains the "salty" taste of NH4Cl too), and a bunch of other inorganic ions aswell. it has been shown that we can taste calcium and magnesium ions, and they have been described as bitter by some, as salty or metallic by others, so it's probably neither and instead a distinct "sense". We can taste fat, receptors for fatty acids have been found, aswell as enzymes in saliva that can break down fat to release free fatty acids. There are several different "bitter" receptors and atleast two different "sweet" receptors and they may trigger different sensations. There is also no reason to believe we have even found all of the taste receptors or "senses" yet.

why do people say umami when there's already an english word for savory and umami sounds retarded

>> No.17445230

Because savory is different to umami. It's a category, not a flavor.
