Food science thread!
I drink this shit a lot, and my friend Is concerned about my health because of It, I can't really blame him there are a lot of rumors surrounding this drink, so I decided to research every ingredient In It, may this be useful to fellow Monsterbros

>Water
It's water

>Citric Acid
The stuff that makes lemons sour, may damage teeth If consumed excessively, otherwise It's non toxic

>CO2
You burp or fart it out, nothing happens besides inflate your stomach

>Taurine (0.4%)
Taurine Is already found naturally within our bodies and other animals, the reason It's included In energy drinks Is that It's widely suggested It improves mental and physical performance when paired with caffeine, It also calms the nervous system and lowers blood pressure, In short, It's good for your heart

>sodium citrate
Popular preservative, can help prevent kidney stones by making blood and urine more acidic
"You should not use this medication if you have kidney failure, severe heart damage (such as from a prior heart attack), Addison's disease (an adrenal gland disorder), high levels of potassium in your blood (hyperkalemia), or if you are severely dehydrated or have heat cramps." - https://www.uofmhealth.org/health-library/d03952a1

>flavoring
there is no nutritional difference between natural and artificial flavoring (1/?)

>> No.17237595

>extract from panax ginseng roots (0.08%)
"Panax ginseng is taken by mouth for memory and thinking skills, Alzheimer disease, depression, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support many of these uses." - https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-1000/panax-ginseng (you can also find specific scenarios In which you should not consume this)

"Ginseng is a plant with health-promoting properties that is often considered a staple in traditional Chinese medicine. ... Summary Ginseng, which is often used in traditional Chinese medicine, may stimulate weight loss, delay fat absorption and modify fat formation." - https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/weight-loss-herbs

>sucralose
It has shown to reduce gut bacteria In mice, however only In mega doses, It Is 300 to 1000 times sweeter than sugar so not a lot of It has to be used, we are also like 100 times the size of mice

>Acesulfame potassium
Perhaps the most controversial ingredient on this list, It's a sweetener but many people link it to being a carcinogen, however this Is not supported. I spend a great deal of time researching a study about this and I have come with a conclusion, In normal doses It might alter your metabolism very slightly but In chronic doses (which you will never reach with this drink) It can alter the brain, here's a study on mice where I got these conclusions from - https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0070257

>sorbic acid
"Sorbic acid is a naturally occurring compound that’s become the most commonly used food preservative in the world, and it makes the global food chain possible. It’s highly effective at inhibiting the growth of mold, which can spoil food and spread fatal diseases." - https://www.healthline.com/health/food-nutrition/what-is-sorbic-acid (2/?)

>> No.17237598

>benzoic acid
pH adjustor and preservative, non toxic, considered safe by the FDA, I couldn't find much info about it, if any anon knows more I'm happy to hear but I wouldn't worry too much about it

>caffeine (0.03%)
Caffeine is generally good for your health, just don't overdose (max 200mg dose and 400mg day, this drink has 150mg) It helps with heart disease, improves memory and performance and may boost your metabolism, leading to efficient weight loss
Not safe for children as It can have harmful effects on their development, don't give energy drinks to kids.

>L-carnitine L-tartrate (0.015%)
"This is commonly added to sports supplements due to its rapid absorption rate. It may aid muscle soreness and recovery in exercise" - https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/l-carnitine#what-it-is

>Vitamins B3, B5, B6 and B12
Energy boosting vitamins, nothing wrong with them

>Sodium chloride
It's salt

>d-glucuronolactone
Naturally occurring metabolite, commonly used as an ingredient in "energy" drinks to increase attention and improve athletic performance, but there is no good scientific evidence to support its use, however not harmful

>guarana seed extract (0.002%)
"Guarana is a plant named for the Guarani tribe in the Amazon, who used the seeds to brew a drink. Today, guarana seeds are still used as medicine. Guarana is used for weight loss, to enhance athletic performance, as a stimulant, and to reduce mental and physical fatigue" - https://www.rxlist.com/guarana/supplements.htm
Safe in small doses, and as you can see by that percent, this is a minuscule dose

>inositol
https://www.verywellmind.com/inositol-what-should-i-know-about-it-89466 - Several health benefits, dosage shouldn't be more than 12 grams a day, It's the last ingredient on the list, therefore the quantity is very far from 12 grams (3/3)

>> No.17237602

>CONCLUSION
It's safe and even provides benefits, just don't overdose on It by limiting yourself to 1 or 2 a day however NOT in a row, don't give to children.

I hope I managed to ease your paranoia or helped you convince someone or some shit, I made this thread mostly for myself anyway, farewell anons

I'm pretty sure the "nutritionists" behind the "omg seltzer water is just as bad for you!" are probably just some fat appalachian chicks who drink mountain dew and graduated with a nutrition degree and a D-

>Energy boosting vitamins, nothing wrong with them
I recommend you do look into the health effects of the overabundance of these vitamins if you drink this almost daily, the nutritional information on the can says 250ml contains 100% of all listed vitamins. Considering one can is double that amount, and I highly doubt anyone drinks only half a can at a time, it's probably right for people to express concerns.

I looked it up, Niacin (B3) is the biggest concern of it, but apparently It does not stay in your body for a long time because It is water soluble, so you simply piss it out, In high doses it will cause you problems (a woman who drank 10 cans a day for 2 weeks straight developed acute hepatitis) monster has 40mg of Niacin

https://www.drugs.com/medical-answers/how-long-does-niacin-stay-in-the-human-system-419351/
https://www.mountsinai.org/health-library/supplement/vitamin-b3-niacin

Should have looked more into it, my mistake that I just assumed vitamins are always le good
I shall retract what I said, every day consumption doesn't sound like a good idea but 3 times a week sounds safe
