Live and learn, anon.
You paid $60 in “stupid tax”, and chances are you won’t ever make that mistake again.
Plenty of people have paid far more in stupid tax, so don’t beat yourself up over it.

I've moved so many apartments over the years I've straight got the routine down for the first things I do.
1. Disconnect the smoke alarm
2. Change the fridge temp to max
3. Replace all the bulbs with led
4. Replace the shower head

>1. Disconnect the smoke alarm
Are you retarded? You live in a building with other people and their kids. Any of whom could set a fire, plus not to mention all the increased chances of ignition from all the stoves and refrigerators and so electrical devices such as cell phones your neighbors are using. The first thing I did when I had a roommate move in to my place was buy a new smoke alarm. It has already saved our lives once when I was asleep and he came home drunk and started cooking something and passed out on the couch while it was cooking. Thankfully the smoke alarm woke me up and I was able to turn it off before it started a fire. My roommate was so drunk I could not wake him up, which is good because I was ready to kick his ass.

I always disinfect the kitchens, fridge and freezer, and bleach all surfaces in the bathrooms again. It'll be spit shined by some subpar cleaning service and no actual bleach will have been used. They'll use the same rag to wipe everything.
Hot water and bleach cycles through the laundry, and maybe a white load or two to be sure.
Top lock rekeyed with a locksmith, no spare to the owner on the deadbolt changeout, oops I forgot until the day I move out.
Always #4, and it has to be a showerhead that I've physically removed the water flow saver device inside of it.

Every apartment I've lived in, the smoke alarm would go off if you so much as THOUGHT about using the stove. If it's going to be a total annoyance and cry wolf every day even though there ISN'T a fire, then it's a pointless piece of equipment that only trains us to resent it and not believe its idiotic warning.

>step out of my 200 sq ft apartment that I pay $3,800/month to rent. I’m in a rush to meet my friend at the local Ethiopian-Korean fusion micro pub to drink a couple of cactus infused mango milkshake IPAs

>on my way to the pub I slip in some homeless man’s shit and land on an AIDS needle
>get into the pub and see they’re having a half price special, 1 authentic Ethiopian Korean taco + a half pint of a local draft for only $39.99!
>Maxine comes in and looks so brave and stunning! She sneezes as she gets to the table. I made the mistake of telling her gazuntite (a nazi word co-opted by the radical right). Someone recorded it and sent it to my boss, got a text that I need to come and clean my things from the office tomorrow.
>have fun with Maxine but it’s time I get home. Take the local bus and sit next to a junkie nodding off on heroin who vomits all over me
>so exhausted at this point, I can’t wait to finally get home to be surrounded by all of the refreshing grey concrete
