>if you're saying they aren't distinctively overly pickley, I'm even more inclined to believe it was just the bag I got.
No, they never struck me as "pickley". They're remarkably close to Chic-fil-A in flavor although admittedly I have gotten some weird texture issues as they can be all over the place in terms of size, so maybe you got a mushy one and your mind went to pickle or maybe it was indeed a bad batch as you say. If they can't ensure consistency in size then they may have other QC issues at their chickie factory.

I've noticed that quality control is declining across the board in lots of foods. We're not just dealing with supply chain issues. These things nearly choked me with gristle the other day. Not even being hyperbolic. I got a long string of tissue lodged in my throat.

Bird's Eye is "good" because they literally dump some kind of sauce in 90% of their product line now. They even merchandise the seasoned and sauced veggies in with the regular frozen veggies. Once the private label store brands got the microwavable steamer bags, the premium brands were fucked.

>do you like hot dogs?
Some. Hebrew National and Boar's Head are good. I'd imagine the corn dogs you get at fairs and ball parks and such might be good if they use a similar hotdog to the ones they sell on a bun as those are a different "restaurant" grade of hotdog that you generally can't get in traditional retail in most places. You have to order them from places like Omaha Steak. Every corn dog I've had has been abjectly miserable, the store-bought frozen ones, deli and gas station, and cheap food service ones like the ones they served in school. Just awful.

Though from the 90s- until COVID supermarket food got MUCH better (including frozen food) we're going back to the way things used to be in the 80's and prior, which is that you literally can't get a certain grade of food at retail. It's all diverted to restaurants and high-end institutional buyers. The only exception will be internet sellers and the "box" subscription type shitties like Butcher Box and Omaha Steaks and those will remain price-prohibitive for most people.

notable mentions:
>tyson chicken tenders
good taste and decent value but every variety other than original is heinous. their air-fried kind is frequently packing the cooler while all other varieties are sold out.
>corn dogs
state fair > foster farms, but foster farms is easier to find the big boxes for which is a considerably better value than the 5/6 packs
>stouffers
only thing worth getting is their "lasagna with meat and sauce", other varieties of lasagna are bad, the mac and cheese is too boring to be a meal in and of itself, and i don't think the stuffed peppers are really meant to be eaten as a meal.
>marie calenders
has like 1 or 2 good things. the chicken alfredo is watery but an option if everything passable is sold out. probably has the best national-brand pot pies.
>non-mega meal banquet
bad taste and bad value but will put food in your stomach if you only have $1.25
>hot pockets
okay taste, but very poor user experience, one isn't a meal on its own, and eating two as a meal is a bad value.
>hungry man
hungry man "gold box" (premium fried chicken) is based, but hard to justify at $4/box. if you can get regular hungry man fried chicken (blue box) for $3 it's a safe bet.

>the chicken alfredo is watery but an option if everything passable is sold out.
No one should ever expect frozen alfredo to be good, although it's probably a step up from canned. It's "watery" because for whatever reason frozen food manufacturers love to skimp on things like heavy cream (or even whole milk) as an ingredient. With a notable exception being...

>the best national-brand pot pies.
Marie Calendar's pot pies are fantastic. Really good and they definitely use whole cream. They almost have to because along with Dinty Moore Beef Stew, they are per serving one of the least healthy national brand food items you can get for yourself in a supermarket. Last time I checked the chicken was worse for you than the beef.

that last one has been my favorite frozen dinner for 3 or 4 years, whenever they came out. it's the only frozen meal I don't doctor up with anything, you just have to micro manage it in your microwave so it heats properly. after it's not frozen, you push everything around the sides of the bowl so the middle has nothing in it, and 'wave it for another 2 minutes. don't forget to cut the meatballs in half after it's done so you can put some on bread later for a second meal.

The hardest thing for plebs about making hashbrowns is forming the 'hash' into something presentable and workable without over/under cooking. Those patties come pre-formed and thus allow you to essentially deep fry them in a relatively small amount of oil, thus negating the most difficult challenge and allowing one of the tastiest cooking methods to be done relatively conveniently.

These fucking suck hard.

I've given up eating most frozen food, but a couple years ago, I saw those and thought that they might just not be awful.

They're the saltiest, driest, chewiest, worst waste of money. The crust doesn't seal, so as you're blasting it with heat, the filling evaporates and burns. The """pretzel""" crust is nothing but dry, salty, chewy mess.

It still manages to fall apart and be messy, even though they dry out by cooking.

There's nothing wrong with them. If anything, they're kinda neutral.

They don't crisp up well in a pan or a grill, but they do well boiled, or, in this case, encased in corn batter.

Most Oscar Mayer hotdogs are worse, especially their turkey dogs.

Bar-S is at least honest of what you're getting.
