The difference, here, is that the reaction isn't to the art, but to the artist -- that the artist is lazy, pretentious, untalented, and vapid and, thus, creates art that, at best, creates only the illusion of depth. If a rat died in the middle of an art gallery, it would garner a reaction from the patrons, but that wouldn't make it "art".
