Seconding Korma. I'm presuming you're going to a North Indian place. South Indian, no idea. I only know those burrito like things they sell.

Get it as spicy as you want. Or if you want to go for something that can get very spicy, do Vindaloo. It's up to you. I would say you can't really go wrong with your choice just pick the one that sounds like it has the spices you most like.

There's a huge difference actually. Most creamy and tomato based curries with meat, and even the word Curry and overarching concept itself, are British adaptations or completely new inventions from Indian dishes you simply don't get outside the subcontinent.

Actual Indian food probably uses a wider range of basic ingredients than what western tastes enjoy, but is usually simpler meals

all the restaurants ive been to in india have the same stuff you find outside the country. here is a menu from a random dhaba i googled.
>>16772961
its my usual combination, its handy cause you can usually find this stuff everywhere so its a good way to benchmark different restaurants. i do like to try a less common dish or two if im making a larger order. btw try and score a behl puri if you want a dope appetizer.

there are all sorts of random regional things but i think pic related sums up the 2 "parent" styles of cuisine. also chinese food is insanely popular there and lots of restaurants even have a chinese section.

I love lamb dishes, especially the ones my mom makes, but every Indian place I've been to has a tendency to overcook lamb/goat to the point where it's like rubber.
Imma give it a shot tomorrow though.

typically I like to get some onion kulcha bread with a couple yummy things like a tamarind chutney, an aachar, esp if mango season, or some raita with whatever I get. If in a group, I'll get a couple apps like samosas or packoras.
I try to get 2-3 mains to split around the table for a variety on each plate, and make them quite different to each other in sauce flavors or in the textures, so typically ike a veggie main like some chana masala something from the tandoor menu, or a pork or chicken jafrezi or vindaloo, ie something very hot, and then a lamb rogan josh. If I am getting a grilled main, then a biryani to go with it.

At home no problem using a simmer jar sauce like korma or butter chicken, but never something so boring in a restaurant. They need to wow me.

South Indian here, Parathas are based, probably my favorite Indian bread (keema naan is a close second). The only problem is that every place I go to seems to never have them.
The upside is that they're always at Indian grocery stores, but they're a caloric nightmare so I can't eat them all the time like when I was a kid.

pajeet here, parathas were always more of a breakfast thing in my senpai. paratha and eggs (fried or bhurji) with a bit of ketchup and chilli sauce was what i usually ate. if your town has a big punjabi community then they probably have some shops that sell aloo and ghobi paratha all day.

South Indian food has way better vegetarian options and biryani imo but I'm really not a fan of their curries. This only really applies to restaurants over in the states though, when I go to India or when my parents make curry it tastes really good whereas in restaurants it all tastes like some Chicken Chettinad clone.

I went to an Indian restaurant in Portugal once. They've got a ton of pajeets, so their restaurants are everywhere. All the food tasted like it had tons of sugar added. It seriously wasn't as good as the pajeateries I've eaten at back home in the US.
