never understood the need for rice cookers.

1. wash your rice
2. 1.25 water : 1 rice ratio
3. bring to boil
4. bring to lowest flame, leave covered for 18 mins
5. take off stove, let rest 10+ more mins

perfect every time

Rice cookers are just convinient, and saves a stovetop for cooking something else while preoaring a meal.

i mean yeah, but really the only time this is saving you is the initial 2-3 mins when it comes to a boil.

next 18 mins are completely unattended, then its like 20 seconds to get up and remove from heat.

is it worth the extra clutter and taking up space in your kitchen? i guess if you have a big kitchen yeah

>is it worth the extra clutter and taking up space in your kitchen?
It kind of takes space, but also can save space depending on how you look at it. You save an extra burner/heating element, and you can keep the cooked rice inside it on the counter.
That, and you really don't have to worry about paying attention to the rice while cooking other things.

I am going to buy a rolling cart to put to the side and just roll that into my kitchen when I need it so I won't need to use up any counter space even when I want to use it. it will be nice for my instant pot too since I don't like having them steaming under my counters

It's no different or better than a cheap $10 rice cooker. It's such a simple and perfect design that it can neither be improved upon nor cheapened. A magnet holds the pot to the element until the water is absorbed or evaporated, at which point the metal pot heats up past the curie point, demagnetizes, and releases from the element. There's no timers or sensors or anything to upgrade. You're just paying for branding for the slightly more expensive ones, and a digital clock for the ridiculously expensive ones., or perhaps over priced accessories like a steaming tray.

Had one of the cheaper ones like that; used it a lot but it did have a tendency to burn the rice on the bottom. The pot's non-stick coating also seemed to pretty rapidly degrade. I decided to pick up a Zoji earlier this year -- the taste and texture of the rice seems substantially different.
Half a year into owning the Zoji I have yet to see any burnt rice out of it, and the pot's a much heavier and sturdy piece than the cheap one. Haven't seen any issues with the coating yet, although I feel like I'd really prefer a stainless steel pot that I could just toss in the dishwasher.

Is it a Japanese/Korean rice cooker?
If so, are you referring to the “rinse-free” setting?
Because Asian rinse-free rice is totally different than western “enriched” long grain that says “do not rinse” on the bag.
The former is a the result of developing a new milling technology, the goal being to help consumers conserve water at home.
The latter is literally “we sprayed our rice with liquid vitamins and minerals, so plz don’t wash off the nutrition”.
