You're asking the wrong question, OP. Because there is only one place in the US with two iconic sandwiches. Well, really one is an entire family of sandwiches.

The place I'm talking about is New Orleans, which has the Muffaletta and the Po' Boy, which as I said, is an entire family of sandwiches. Roast beef poboys, every variety of fried seafood you can imagine on a poboy. Every variety of cold cut meats you can imagine on a poboy. You like hamburgers/cheeseburgers? They have hamburger or cheesburger poboys.

What other place in the US has birthed two iconic sandwiches?

Mayo on burger is trash anyway but even so I understand that it's a different thing. Mayo doesn't melt into liquid fat when it's put on a burger, butter does so what you get is a burger soaked with liquid butter which is really just a super greasy burger but with butter flavor. Nothing wrong with a little butter on the bun for flavor, preferably toasted, but drenching the thing in butter is just retarded.

Five Guys started in Arlington, but their burger style is nothing special (just more home-style or dive-style than something like McDonalds).

Maryland also has crab-cake sandwiches. And pit beef in Charm City.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pit_beef

More generally, also missing from the crappy OP graphic:

>Beef on weck (Buffalo NY)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beef_on_weck

>Pork roll, egg & cheese on a kaiser bun (New Jersey)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TutI8k49xoA

>Scrapple sandwich (maybe not too popular, but Mid-atlantic generally if you know where to look)

The real question is which sandwiches are truly local because of ingredients. Most of these examples, you could make anywhere AT HOME after going to the grocery store (zoomers btfo). But there is no substitute for fresh seafood (coasties win here), or elk (West wins here). I would include the green NM chiles (Hatch) too, but those are pretty widely available now.

The onion burger isn't just a burger with onion on it, it was made in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl to stretch beef further and allow people to buy them cheaper. There is about 3/4 of an onion thinly sliced and smashed down into the burger from the top, then it is flipped and the burger finishes cooking through the steam from the onions frying. They are amazing and Oklahoma deserves credit for them.

I feel like comparing burgers, hot sandwiches, and deli style sandwiches is a little invalid. It's applies and oranges. I don't know if Lobster Rolls represent New England as a whole, but as a Massachusetts native who did their schooling in Rhode Island it is something that is quintessentially summer to me and a nice indulgence I really enjoy. I also think a cheesesteak type sandwich is something that's like my go-to degeneracy meal. Midnight (or hung-over the next morning) at the hole-in-the wall mexican place that did cheesesteaks for some reason too. Jersey Mikes does pretty good cheesesteaks, but not as well. And when I was at UPS Jimmy Johns was like the go-to spot after work to restore all the expended calories. Subway has really fallen from grace- get a meatball sub if anything but ANYWHERE ELSE is better. Panera has still got it, but there's better value out there. I feel like I don't get burgers as much as I'd use to since I'd like to eat healthier and not nearly as active anymore but it's hard to pass up Five Guys or Shake Shack.
