I spent all day thinking about the smell of coffee. I've never drank coffee before. So I bought some instant coffee. It was terrible. Bitter as all hell, even with a bunch of milk in it.

Thinking the next step up would be to get a cone, some filters and grind a bag of coffee from the store. I don't want to spend any money on this.

Is coffee even good?

The better (read: expensive) a grinder is the more consistent the grind will be with less chaff. If a little mud in the bottom of your cup doesn't bother you (assuming you are brewing with a method where it could even get there) then spend however little you care to. Also, they tend to be made of better parts, less plastic that can break.

If you drink coffee daily I think that hand grinding gets pretty annoying after a while, personally. The best benefits I see to it is that they are cheaper to get a good grind out of them and they are portable. So if you travel of camp a lot and want to bring good coffee with you then it is the only way to go.

Automatics are great too and necessary if you ever want to do espresso. But for three bills you can get the Ode, which is all you will need for the home anyway and the new ones you can get on their site already have the upgraded burrs now as well.

Maybe you just have shit taste. Or like the others have said you could need better water or technique.

There is no single great method with how French Press or any other kind is made. There is a recommended safe benchmark and you should experiment from there.

If you liked that coffee then you should try a finer grind size, maybe let the grounds steep longer, maybe stir them (I like to, I think Hoff's FP technique is shit), maybe if you have been getting dark roast get something light instead.

>>16630073
He mentions water which is often overlooked. The water does need to have a certain mineral content too; distilled or RO water is going to typically going to make shittier tasting coffee than city water. Coffee ground require a chemical reaction with minerals typically found in drinking water.

There was even a guy that wrote a book on just the water itself and how it helped with extraction. Sadly he no longer sells the book saying it'll be updated later. Meanwhile he sells water filtration that'll make your best coffee, so he is probably never going to publish a second edition cause it is probably not nearly as profitable to give up the results of his extensive research instead.

He's right, but in the most uncharitable manner possible. Coffee doesn't have "Flavour" in the way you traditionally understand. It's all just varying levels of volatile acids and polyphenols. But to say notes are bullshit, can only be done in a manner that is insincere and uncharitable. If someone can't get "Blueberry" or "Raspberry", I'll ask if it's "Tart, almost juicy" Berry is just a subcategory below that.

20lbs of guatamalan greens.

>Region: Lake Atitlan

>This region encompasses all of the lands surrounding Lake Atitlan. Coffee is mainly harvested on the side of the Pacific in a region of three volcanic mountains with a high precipitation.
There are five volcanic regions in Guatemala, and the soil of Atitlán is the richest in terms of its organic matter. In fact, ninety percent of Atitlán’s coffee is cultivated on the sides of the volcanoes surrounding the majestic Lake Atitlán. There is 50 mm of rain every month in this region. Most coffee producers in this region will use water from the lake for wet processing. Instead of chemicals, organic matter is often used as a fertilizer. The high altitude (4,000-5,900 feet) results in a low occurrence of pests and diseases. Yet it’s not only the soil that impacts Atitlán’s coffee: winds known as Xocomil influence the region’s microclimates.

>Producer: Tinamit Tolinan Cooperative

>Process: Washed and patio dried

>It is a small farm they grow mostly Bourbon, Sarchimor and Caturra trees. Ben actually does the sample roasting for the local distributor in NC.

>Tasting Notes:Clean, honey sweet well balanced cup with hints of cherry/plum and nice chocolate tones.

Either learn to use or get a better grinder than what you've got, or start using better beans - I honestly think the biggest improvement would be with the latter, as I don't think grind matters so much in a cold brew.

I dunno, try some other beans, or maybe accept that you don't dig cold brew all that much.

buy a burr grinder first, you can get great results with a coffee machine and a good burr grinder. With a setup like that you should be able to taste the notes and explore the origin characteristics of different coffees.
You might want to move into pour over later to have a bit more control over the brew but for that you need a good gooseneck kettle and lots of time to practice and experiment to get the brew right
As I said earlier in the thread I'd reccomend grabbing a solis scala from seattle coffee gear since theyre on sale and and a bag of specialty beans either online or from a local roaster

>Why is specialty coffee so fucking expensive

1.) Specialty grade coffee is the best stuff an individual farm or growing co-op region produces after sorting and grading, thus it is rarer and buyers bid higher on the lots.

2.) You are paying a roaster's tax on roasted coffee because roasting coffee is a service and a business. You should expect to pay more per pound than other roasted coffees because of the higher cost of specialty grade coffees.

No matter which way you slice it, you can't get the best 10% of coffee crops grown every year for the same price as the rest of it. You can pay about the same for very good coffee as average or above-average coffee if you start roasting yourself though. Not everybody is into that.

>I do only pourover, medium-fine grind, 40-45g per batch. I need something that will not fucking break for 10+ years.

If you're dead set on spending $500, get the top model of the m47 and toss the pourover burrs on(+40ish). The stock burrs may produce more fines than you'd like. You could legitimately beat several people to death and go right back onto grinding. 1.2kg of steel. Looks like gear.coffee has the phoenix and simplicity in stock. Same grinder, little bit lighter. Your batch size might be slightly annoying. ~45g and I have to empty the catch cup.

Just got my first moka pot today and used it once. I quite like how it came out, definitely bitter but still delicious.
>warmed up the stove first to medium heat
>ground them to slightly smaller than the holes in the coffee chamber/funnel
>was using a dark roast
>did not pack coffee, filled up the chamber, leveled it, made sure rim was clean
>warmed up the water first in my electric kettle (gets to boiling before it shuts off)
>pour in water, put pot on stove (mine is a regular coil element elec stove FWIW)
>watched as it came out, took it off as soon as it started sputtering
>ran it under a cold faucet, making sure to hit the chamber but not the collector
>poured, let it cool a bit, drank it black

Honestly don't see a reason to run it under cold water like so many people say to do. Just pour it out and it's all the same, right? Cooling it down seems to take longer and is more hassle, etc.

Going to try coarser and finer grinds, play with the temp some and stove setting. I put mine at just under 5, which I know gives me about 200F water. Didn't take long this way either.

But personally it was good, and I was perfectly satisfied with my first attempt at using it, much to my pleasant surprise.

Undecided grinder guy here. Curious about the Chestnut X. It looks really cool, but expensive. There's a Chinese coffee nerd video where he compares it with the Comandante c40, but it's unintelligible to me. There are some particle size distribution tests which sort of make sense. It really does seem like that at the higher tier of manual grinders they're all pretty good.

Even though I budgeted $500 for a grinder, I'm kind of surprised that all the premium-premium hand grinders cost $300-500.

I just talked to a sales rep at Comandante USA. She told me the c40 mk4 now comes with a "glass polymer" catch cup, which I ferreted out is a high-impact plastic, although the replacement glass jars are still available. I'm not crazy about plastic, but it's probably a good idea as a travel jar.

Right now I'm trying to decide between the kinu classic, the comandante c40, and the 1zpresso J-plus. I just don't know. I wish I could feel up all three and do a taste test on them.

Oh, and I got a confirmation that all the clear and brown glass jars are completely interchangeable with the new plastic ones, as well as all of the mods like the red clix axle and knobs, etc. Supposedly the burr set is the same. >cold water necessary
Yes and no. If its already really sputtering out hard, putting water on it, won't change anything. What the water is better for is when you take it off the heat right before it starts to sputter. Stopping it before sputter keeps that last ounce or so being pumped out that is going to be the most bitter part of the extraction. You stopping it right before sputter, when it starts to run really translucent, might stop it from being as bitter.
