I've lived in Illinois my entire life. I just had to look up "hy-vee" because I've literally never heard of it once in my entire life. I thought it was a restaurant at first, but of course it wouldn't be packaged like that. Apparently the closest location to me is in Peru, Illinois, which is in the central part of Illinois.

We shop at Jewel, Marianos, and Meijer here. Never heard of this hick Hy-vee bullshit.

The GL coastal regions are culturally more east coast due to their longstanding maritime connections. Their cities very often have a cultural divide with their own state's interior cities, which could be considered more typical mid-west.
This is reflected in the proliferation of chain stores, etc.: the interior cities would be more southern/mid-western, and the coastal cities would be more eastern or rust belt.
Cleveland, Toledo, Gary, Chicago, etc. are more likely to have more in common with each other than:

Sushi in the midwest is flown in. It's the best and freshest fish you can get. My midwestern down has awesome sushi everywhere.

And HyVee is a regional grocery chain here in the midwest akin to a Trader Joe's or Sprouts. Lots of prepared foods, normal stuff, gourmet meats, prime steaks, scratch bakery.
