It only takes, what, six to eight minutes to prep, and brew a v60. Just enjoy it.
I got sent a sample in work from our roaster and decided to get some in. I've fucked around with it on filter for V60 and then on espresso. When it's on milk, tastes like a damn brownie. Wonderful stuff, nice natural sweetness with very little acidity. Got a bag sitting at home too.

I tried something interesting yesterday with my coffee process. I don't own any machines or tools but paper filters and an electric bean grinder. I've tried in-mug submersion and coldbrew, but neither were especially pleasant. I wet a paper filter over my mug, wrapping its sides around the rim of the full mug. After tossing out the waste water, I prepared 20g of freshly ground coffee beans in a coarse grind into the paper filter, and then bloomed it for 30s with 50ml of water at 212F. I did this and added more water progressively as instructed in this video for a V60: https://youtu.be/XlLqJwJHjp0

Effectively, it was pour-over without a dedicated holder of any kind. It came out quite nice in my opinion. Pleasant chocolate notes, mellow but not weak, not too sour or bitter, and had a modestly sweet aftertaste. Was able to repeat this with the same grinds three times before the paper gave in on the 4th. I tried it with almond milk and sweetener once, but I preferred it black. Was nice overall, though it makes me wonder how much better a dedicated V60 would be. Kind of makes me want to get a metal all-in-one.

Also depends what you're after. I used a £100 DeLonghi machine for years. It made ok espresso. Nothing special but if you want to drink average espresso then it was fine. I wasn't really "in to" coffee at that point and it suited my needs.

If you want good espresso, the cheapest way to achieve that is a manual machine and manual grinder. Something like Flair classic is quite cheap. Realistically you want the best grinder you can get. It's worth doing research because a lot of hand grinders aren't designed to grind for espresso. So whilst they might look and be cheap, you probably won't get the outcome you want.

If you don't want manual, then both the grinders and machines get even more expensive. Id probably budget at least £300 for a machine and £200 for a grinder.

When I did French Press as my everyday coffee before work I would just give everything a quick rinse, most annoying part was getting the grounds out of the beaker. I'd definitely recommend a more thorough cleaning maybe weekly or biweekly. Added advantage is once you've got your recipe figured out, which is pretty simple for French Press, the actual brewing is set and forget as opposed to something with more involved technique and variables.
If you want to get really lazy just brew a big batch of strong cold brew and portion/dilute for the week.

Depends what you enjoy and how much you can spend before you break the bank. Do you want espresso or not? You can get a decent espresso for £250 at home.

Personally I think if you are on a really tight budget and you arent determined to have espresso, the V60 is the best. But thats just personal taste. I have never had a coffee i enjoyed from a moka pot whereas some people like them.

Its hard to say if its better - its just a different drink.

If you want to drink 'good' coffee, the first thing you need is good coffee beans. Preferably fresh, from a local/online roaster. You then need a decent grinder to grind those beans to the level required for however youre trying to brew.

Pod machines are shit. Overpriced, shit coffee. If youre looking to get in to coffee in any meaningful way, id avoid them.

If you want to go really budget espresso then a DeLonghi espresso machine for around £100 is a better option than pods. This at least gives you the option to control what coffee, how much, how its ground. And even if you buy pre ground, its still better than pods.

If you want to go for a decent set up straight away on a budget, then Flair classic + manual grinder that can do espresso will cost about £250-£300.

The grinder is going to be the biggest hurdle. Once you've jumped over that with a half decent grinder, you can explore brewing methods to your hearts content. Anon all those break the bank. Your 3 starters are: French press, Moka pot, and pour-over; listed from easiest to hardest. I'm a cheapskate and grind my beans with store grinders, but you won't get a consistent grind which might be more noticable in the last two. I don't have experience with pour-overs, but moka pot requires a specific grind, and doesn't play well with very light roasts; needs to be at least cinnamon. French press Hoffman method basically works for 90% of coffee and the least amount of fuss. Also good to do coffee spice infusions with(pic related). That or there are coffee snob tier automated drip/pour-over machines around $200 I think. Anything past that is expensive.

A cup of this nice Kenyan. It's full-bodied with orange zest, cardamom and clove, hint of chocolate, mild acidity. Second to last batch of my 2020 Kenyas. Sad to see it go, but I have a new 2021 one coming soon that'll be very similar.

I do absolutely love some Kenyans and yours sounds good, just finished some lovely blackcurranty kenyan, but unfortunately can't get anymore, and all the tasting notes of stuff we can currently get is all lime, which I don't like

ehhh tasting notes are a little bs imo. something like 'citrus' or 'fresh fruit' sure. being hyper-specific makes no sense though given how subjective taste is. I look at tasting notes as a rough idea of the coffee, in (sometimes extremely) broad strokes. your brew method alone will alter the notes. if you don't like acidity, you can always lean towards a higher extraction anyway

>> No.16329579

>tasting notes are a little bs imo
Oh for sure, when something says something along the lines of "strawberry cheesecake, or raspberry jam" it just means either strawberry or raspberry, they certainly go over the top, but in my experience lime just means fat acidity, which i could knock out a bit through roasting longer/hotter, but i can never bring myself to buy them haha

Yeah, it was a really good one. The cupping notes didn't sound so great when I bought it, but after roasting some up I was kicking myself for not buying more. Buying coffee is kind of a gamble. I got into it as it's my family business, so i grew into it basically, the setup can be very expensive or reasonable, depends what you roast on, i don't personally know much about the consumer level roasting equipment though, green beans would probably be hard to buy as a retail customer, best bet would probably be contacting a local roaster and asking if you can buy 1kg of greens or something, we have 1 or 2 customers who do that with us

I've been roasting my own for about six months now. I started with a popcorn popper ($20 Nostalgia Pop) that gave surprisingly good results even compared to my favorite roasteries(not quite as good but not too far off). Because of the low investment I'd definitely say a cheap popcorn popper is a good place to dip your toes. I've been using a Behmor 2000AB+ for the past two months and while it gives very good results and has better capacity than most home roasters it's poorly thought in terms of operation so I can't fully reccomend it. As for sourcing beans it's pretty easy and definitely cheaper than roasteries. I know lots of people like Sweet Maria's but I have been ordering from Coffee Bean Corral and I'm impressed with their selection and customer service.

So overall yeah if you're interested in roasting your own it's not too hard and is a great way to try a lot of different varieties and roast levels.

Yes, but good coffee is good coffee. It's not necessarily a difference in the coffee being objectively 'better.' But there will be noticeable differences in the taste and notes you'll pick up due to the different extraction process. If you're using whole beans, getting your coffee to water ratio correct, and making sure you're using a medium grind -- even a cheap drip machine can produce a very good cup of joe that's worth the beans. I'm not really familiar with the particular brands, but I know there are higher quality drip machines out there worth dropping the money on if that's your thing.

I've had a couple good charcoal roasted coffees when I was in Japan, but it's something I'd only want to drink once in a blue moon. Today i am /sipping/ coffee from Lake Kivu, grown around the lake deep, deep in the dark Congo, on an altitude of 1500-2000 meters. >> No.16340695

>>16340660
I think the pressure that builds up helps concentrate the flavour. Its not as much pressure as in a proper espresso machine but it's the same concept. You want to heat the water really slowly and over a small flame. The slower the top chamber fills up the more concentrated the coffee is. If it is sputtering out and bubbling or steaming its too hot.

This isn't true. I suggest you try it. I grind finer, extend the brew time by pouring more slowly, and hold the bloom for 90 seconds. I have been refining this over twenty years. My coffee is neither underextracted nor overextracted. It's just stronger than yours. I care a lot about the taste. This is why I buy really good coffee and roast it exactly how I like it. My coffee makes people weep tears of joy.

Your premise is illogical and silly. How can you possibly get more flavor from a coarser grind and more water? I get it. We make coffee differently. People have different tastes. The idea that other people who make coffee differently than you are wasting coffee is ridiculous. Don't be a fucking snob, whelp.

More water = more extraction = more flavour. I'm saying you can get the same extraction and flavour by changing other variables. Using 45g of coffee every time is unnecessary for this, hence why the other anon inferred that you're wasting coffee.
It's an interesting idea, the extremely low ratio, but you're the one being a fucking snob by insinuating the other anon's coffee was weak, as though your bathtub-moonshine-esque homebrew pourover method is normal, which it absolutely isn't. At that point I don't know why you wouldn't just brew with a different method as it's barely pourover, it sounds a lot closer to an immersion brew so why not use a clever dripper or french press? If you wanna do your own thing great, brew however makes you happy but you look like a wanker pretending it's normal and we're the weird ones for using a more typical method

Are the coffee available at any random supermarket a good starting point for newfags? Or should I try to break the bank and buy some specific type of coffee?

I tried this soluble instant coffee and is just not my thing. On a previous job, they took all the office workers for a breakfast to this fancy place, and the coffee they served was fantastic, but couldn't ask brand or type, so I have no idea. It was sweet, but it had the smell of coffee, strong and sour (?), and the office bathroom smell like that coffee later that afternoon, so I imagine it was a very specific type of coffee beans.

Nooo don't buy supermarket beans. Largely because even if the beans are incredible (not super likely) they'll probably be really old and have lost a lot of flavour.
Find a local café you like, ask what they're brewing with. There's a good chance they stock beans and will be able to grind then for you.
As far as brew methods go, clever dripper, aeropress, or french press are all pretty inexpensive and easy to use. Make sure you tell the barista what equipment you're brewing with so they can grind appropriately

Supermarket beans are a waste of money unless you genuinely hate the taste of coffee and don't care. Even if you go with whole beans from a good brand, they are always many months stale and have lost a lot of true taste outside the rare occasion where a local roaster has partnered with the supermarket. Gourmet supreme is a dark roast compared to the original medium roast, so likely very bitter and burnt. All supermarket "dark" roasts are incredibly burnt to the point it will taste like you're drinking bitter ashes. It's bad coffee using the same beans as the original that were just burnt and marketed as "full bodied" and "premium" because they count on the average person not caring or thinking 'darker=better/more sophisticated.' There are definitely good dark roast coffees, but none of them will be found in supermarkets. Stick with the original or a lighter roast like the breakfast blend if you're looking to not torture yourself.
