i am white trash american and knew people growing up who had no fridge, or three fridges (one in the kitchen for produce and cooking stuff, one in the basement or garage for meat and twenty suitcases of keystone ice), people who had no heating and used an oven to warm the house, had no oven and cooked exclusively with a microwave, no hot water so boiled water on a flat top to bathe, did dishes in the bath tub, still using washboards and lye in the year 2015, rigged power strips to cigarette lighters to watch the election or the superbowl because they didn't have wiring in their homes et cetera
