You can literally die from inhaling too much coal smoke and gaseous byproducts that result from burning it. That’s why you use it outside.
Natural gas burns cleanly. Breathing the gas itself is bad for you, but if it’s actually on fire and burning, there’s no resulting bad stuff to breathe.

If you cook food over a gas flame and can taste the gas, you’re using gas that shouldn’t be used for cooking. Or you’re just spraying your food with the gas instead of actually lighting it.
