I live in the US and people here genuinely think that avocado in sushi is delicious and some sort of hidden japanese delicacy. People here are really fucking nuts about japanese food but can never remotely cook anything like it. There are loads upon loads of "sushi" restaurants here but when you go in it's always some weird fucking asian "fusion" ripoff where they fuck up all of the dishes by adding shit like avocado and spicy mayo and shit to it and then they try to fucking play it off as "real japanese food". It doesn't help that people here don't know what normal nigiri or temaki is. It's all fucking gross. I have not had any normal-tasting sushi in all the time I've lived here, and good temaki is about as rare as a polite US police officer. These people are born here, they will live their whole lives here, and they will die in this shit country without ever tasting real ebi gunkan or kujira in their life and that's just sort of sad. The worst part is that because no american person actually knows what real japanese food is like, nobody can call restaurants out on this bullshit, everyone eats it all up and calls it "sooo umaiiiii nom nom nom" and everyone thinks this is what real japanese food is like. It's just sad. "Oh let's add mayo, sriracha and avocado to temaki don't u kno this is how they eat in tokyo!". The worst part for me is that the US doesn't just massacre classic japanese food like this, but they also do it with every other country's cuisine imaginable. korean, chinese, viet, thai, you name it. They botch everything they come across as "wow diverse so cool" but it's never apparently fucking good enough unless they douse it in sriracha and avocado to make it "authentic asian" food. Don't get me wrong I love me some american food but fuck this country for ruining foreign food culture and fuck the people for being too retarded to not know what real food is like, even though they kind of can't help it, fuck em it's gross

I live in Vancouver where the California roll was invented.
Japanese people love this shit. I got a bunch of volunteer hours helping japanese students practice English and they would always say they wanted it back in Japan.

I live in Japan and people here genuinely think that corn on pizza is delicious and some sort of hidden italian delicacy. People here are really fucking nuts about italian food but can never remotely cook anything like it. There are loads upon loads of "italian" restaurants here but when you go in it's always some weird fucking japanese ripoff where they fuck up all of the dishes by adding jap shit like raw squid and eel and shit to it and then they try to fucking play it off as "real italian food". It doesn't help that people here don't know what normal bread or cheese is. It's all fucking gross. I have not had any normal-tasting cheese in all the time I've lived here, and good bread is about as rare as a properly paid salaryman. These people are born on this island, they will live their whole lives on this island, and they will die on this island without ever tasting real bread or cheese in their life and that's just sort of sad. The worst part is that because no japanese person actually knows what real italian food is like, nobody can call restaurants out on this bullshit, everyone eats it all up and calls it "honto ni umaiiiii uwuwuwu" and everyone thinks this is what real italian food is like. It's just sad. "Oh rettsu addu fishu eggu andu seaweedu to pasta carbonara don't u kno this is how rearu itarian peeporu eat!". The worst part for me is that japan doesn't just massacre classic italian food like this, but they also do it with every other country's cuisine imaginable. French, spanish, mexican, turkish, you name it. They botch everything they come across as "wow foreign so cool" but it's never apparently fucking good enough unless they douse it in soy sauce and raw octopus to make it "authentic european" food. Don't get me wrong I love me some japanese food but fuck this country for ruining foreign food culture and fuck the people for being too retarded to not know what real food is like, even though they kind of can't help it, fuck em it's gross

Last time I was in Japan, I had sushi with avocado and thin sliced french fries on it, with an American style horseradish-based wasabi substitute.

I bet it would. Maybe not a big fancy restaurant, just a small cheap place, but Japan generally loves cultural reinterpretations, just marketing it as Japanese-American would be enough. Doesn't even have to use actual Americanized recipes as long as they've got bombastic American names and the occasional oddball ingredient. In fact, the California roll is probably the only one that needs to have any basis in America, the rest can just be named after different states. The Texas roll, the Alaska roll, the New York roll, etc. One of those can just be rolled up katsu.

why is japanese cuisine so hilariously bad?
the main staple dish of nipponland is sushi which is literally just fish on rice
their curry is just watered soup
ramen is just inferior version of authentic Chinese noodles
even instant noodles is taiwanese (Chinese) and not from japan

why could the nips not make a satisfactory cuisine?

Personally I don't care for avocado in my sushi and tend to avoid it.
And that fucking cream cheese in sushi shit really needs to fuckoff.

Then again its more of a case of me not caring for either of those things in general. For example I know some sushi places near me that add jalapeno to the roll (live in the south), which I do enjoy.
